  1. hi guys, got a 748 last year, loved it but bit tatty so stripped n powdercoated, painted etc, all fantastic with a sweet 5000 mile engine.....
700miles later it goes BANG!!! top end still looks mint, cam belts n timing fine, makes huge slow knocking/clunkin noises, no throttle responce, revs shut off instantly, wont tickover, lumps and flakes of steel on sump bolt when dropped the oil, 1 piece was 4mm longx 3mm wide and maybe 2mm thick!!! flywheel nut is fine. hav yet to remove right hand cover. mains or big end i reckon??
i really want to rebuild motor to keep the genuine mileage, is it worth stripping this motor and rebuilding? im happy with cambelts etc but dont have tooling for crank nuts, cylinder nuts etc, so my local ducati shop will be partly-rebuilding lump.
should i just buy a second hand bottom end, or complete motor?
    value your honest opinions :)
    thanks, martyn

  2. Crikey, sounds terminal pal, prob needs to be on the bench for a strip down. Any pics of the bits in the oil?

Personally I would buy a complete engine (less than the cost of a rebuild for sure)

  3. Its got to be worth ripping the motor down yourself,to have a look.Once youve got it in bits you might think it worth a rebuild. At least the strip down costs nowt.

  4. There's been two engines for sale recently, try Cranker V2 or Android 853 sp, Androids was an 853 big bore and Cranker is an sp I think.

  5. am tryin to get pics up but havin issues, not a good pic but looks bad lol

  6. ta, im defo doing this as top end is perfect as is all ancilleries, may be sold towards new motor?

  7. now this has me thinking!!! as iv got to rebuild anyway i was wondering about whats involved with an 853 mod???, i hav a perfect 916 S4 top end sat doing nothing???? has a bent crankshaft and shattered case tho?

  8. Well the 853 has been sold, to do the conversion yourself the 916 barrels will work with special 853 pistons.
    Steve

  9. where can i get these? heard about pistal and je but cant find kits or prices? presume i need 916 head gaskets, do i need to replace cylinder studs?
does the eprom need reprogramming? thanks

  10. Studs are ok, JHP can supply a new eprom and worth ringing them about pistons.
    Steve

  11. If you have to buy a new bottom end and then you are going to spend money on 853 pistons why not buy a 916 engine and have done with it

  12. ...........or a 996

  13. or a 998:upyeah:

  14. or a 1198 and be done with it.........

  15. Or a 1098...it will fit

  16. This might be useful if it goes for a reasonable sum.
