Simonetta was extremely helpful. It's her own apartment, which you might think is an odd one as she has the room upstairs and you share the living room and kitchen if you wish. (Room is separate with an en-suite) You stumble out of the front door right onto a busy little street where you'd happily eat for the rest of your days. Food is great (Better than Rome I thought). Bologna doesn't seem nearly as touristy and there's plenty to do round about.
If it's just a "base" you need the Amadeus is pretty handy. It's used by the factory to house us on training and I've used it as a stop off when touring Italy. Not the most glamourous location, but it's comfy, has free parking and is pretty cheap. Think it cost me about 50 euro a night last summer. It's on a bus route directly into town, and not far from the main roads around Bologna for getting out and about.
If you can delay until the w/e of 11th Sept then you can also take in the Misano GP. I did that with my two teens in 2018 and we had an awesome time. Also, if Rossi announces his retirement this season, it’ll be his last home GP and the atmosphere will be amazing. We stayed in Rimini, on the coast, which is about 2.5 hrs away from Bologna and maybe 15 mins from Misano.
Also, doesn’t Italy basically shut for most of August? Known as “ferie” IIRC. Tourist places tend to stay open but a lot of ordinary businesses do close down, so if a visit to the Ducati factory is on the cards check that it’s open. In 2015 my then girlfriend wanted to surprise me for my bday with a holiday in Italy which would include a tour of the Ducati factory. Unfortunately it was closed so we went to Vienna instead, which turned out to be the most boring city I had ever visited, we had a massive row on the last day and broke up shortly afterwards. Moral of the story - if you’re going on a romantic city break and you value your relationship, make sure that your holiday also involves a visit to the Ducati factory.
Unless they’re doing a test day you can even hire one for the afternoon and thrash it around Fiorano (with a Ferrari chaperone on board)
If this virus really kicks off i wont go to italy, i will prob sail my private ship to my private island in the caymen islands just so i dont have to be near the lower classes.
