916 916 Headlights ?

Discussion in '748 / 916 / 996 / 998' started by Lazza, Mar 30, 2020.

  1. Hi all,

Just prepping the 916 for its MOT and have a headlight question as I can't remember - its been soo long since I last rode her!

When lights are on H (High) and full beam - do both headlights stay lit? My LH side one goes out when I flash or put full beam on. So high its left bulb, full beam its right bulb & left goes out, only parking light stays on on left side??

Seems odd - hence why I'm asking! Hopefully Ive explained what's happening clearly - hold on Ill take some pics lol!

    First Pic - H & full beam

    2nd Pic - H only, (dip)

  2. Lazza, the low beam is on the left if you sit on the bike looking forward and the high beam is on the right. On the earlier single phase bikes the two circuits are fed by the same power supply and IIRC they only work one at time, there is a side light which remains on all the time. On the later three phase bikes there are two relay switched headlight feeds, one for each light and you get both high and low beam on pass and full beam. Later bikes also have two side lights.

  13. Mine had the one one on at a time setup but I modified it so the low beam stays on with the high - simple enough just need to solder a link in the switch.

I also changed the dip to HID (both brighter and less power required) and fitted relays to both with heavier gauge wiring so that they come on quicker and brighter, the single-phase alternator copes OK with it.
