996 Showa Fork Bottom Grub Screw

  1. Hi all,

Hope you're all surviving whatever situation you are in at this time.

Long story short, I'm replacing the fork stanchions on my 996 and I've stripped one down. I'd like to replace the little grub screw that helps lock the stanchion in. They are so small cleaning it up will be tough so along with thread lock I'd like a new grub screw.

So, where can I get one from?

Thanks in advance. (and yes, it is possible to completely strip it on your own! :) )

  2. Are you talking about the twin pinch bolts that hold the fork on the axle? Any screw like this is available from a specialist nut and bolt shop. You could consider stainless steel as an option to high tensile steel. If not these bolts not sure which ones you mean

  3. Thanks for the replay, it's not the axle pinch bolts. I'll try to take a picture later today but it's a little 2mm allen key grub screw that pinches the chrome stanchion in.

  4. Daimatt, do you mean this one?

That's a T7 torx head and it needs a little heat to soften the thread lock and reduce the risk of the tool stripping the head

  5. That's the right place, but mine are knackered old allens. Any idea of the best place to get decent torx ones like yours? Is it just going to be a case of measuring and searching the internet for a pair?

  6. I'd stick with the allen heads but not use plain steel like yours appear to be. Not sure whether they are point, flat or cupped, the length or if they are 4mm or 5mm threads so a measure will be required. Stainless ones would be sensible and use a hard locking compound on the screw and the tube. http://www.ebaystores.co.uk/Bolt-Base. Have yours been been off before? Good luck getting the screws out!

  7. Thanks Denzil, I don't know if they've been off before but I managed to strip one of them right down. Like you said, a bit of heat and some patience and I got it completely stripped. New stanchions to go in so wanted to put a new grub screw in, like you said these are rusty and not looking great. Pointed ends so I'll get measuring and order some new ones.
    Thanks again
