att what temperature does metal go red/orange?

  1. I'm interested to know at what temperature metal goes red hot, because I think I have just been stitched up like a kipper buying a cheapo soldering gun who's tip glows red hot after turning on for 10 seconds .

Actually the color is more orange, This temperature is far too hot for melting solder and as far as I can work out there doesn't seem to be any temperature control of the soldering gun.

I have just bought another proper Weller soldering gun, which is what I should have done in the first place, and I am waiting for delivery. The cheapo gun states in the destruction's that pulling the trigger for 6-8 seconds will heat the tip to 230'C

  6. or poke it into an egg and cook it from the inside out?.

  7. or light a fag?

  8. or use it to cut through 1'' steel plate?
