anyone done the P4 4 pad brembo caliper upgrade ( from 996rs / sps? ) from the standard brembo calipers on a 996, any good, worth doing? , ta kev
the 4 pads callipers are better, there is more bite and less fade downside is a new set of pads costs twice as much if your on track it probably worthwhile, if you only ride on the road then the difference is marginal (and possibly a little more dangerous as its easier to lock up the wheel) you will prob need new lines too as the banjo fittings on the 4 pads are side on whereas goldlines are top mounted i tink your better off getting a radial master cylinder (If you haven't already) with the existing callipers
My bike has the 4 pads on, I've fitted an AP mastercylinder and much to my surprise they are really good. My previous steeds have had PFM's, brembo monoblocs etc etc these are a really good "value caliper" saying that I'd love some AP's :-D
no just road riding, just find the brakes are not as good as a modern sports bike ( yep its 13 years old i know) but in every other respect the 996 is awesome, just needs some better braking i feel , dont want to spend a fortune , umm whats a radial master cylinder? , ta kev
Converted my 748 years ago and was well happy. Fitted with a Brembo radial master and they're as good as my 1098 was. Pads from Brembo are pricey, but you can put a set of Bendix in for about £35 a caliper. You will need different lines as mentioned above. Fairly sure the 848 legs would swap in reasonably easily. Never compared lengths to see how they size up against the earlier Showas...
You need spacers for the disks due to different off set, I got mine from Louige for about £40 IIRC Also a 848 spindle. Very slight mod to speedo drive. There's a thread on MS which covers it. I looked in to a similar up grade to what yr considering and it worked out cheaper and a better result to go the 848 route. I have some very low milage 848 calipers + hoses for sale...:wink::wink:
Go for the radial master cylinder first, then decide if you need any more improvement. i did just that on my 888 and I am happy with the improvement, for a road bike anyway. you may want more power if you regularly track it.

I obviosly ride like a girl, cause I find the braking on my 916 is as sound as a pound. Some old fart pulled out on me and I pulled the best stoppie I have ever done.Perhaps the expletives helped.
For the standard 996 calipers, what size of radial master is required? I certainly notice the difference between the braking on my RC8 and the 996
Depends what effect you're after; have a read here; Overview of a Brembo Master Cylinders Mine is a 19x20, which is a bit trigger!
Yeah the 4 pad calipers are a good step up from standard goldline ones, but so is a radial master cylinder, which, if you havent found out yet, just refers to the position of the piston that pushes the fluid down the brake lines. In effect a radial MC can have a larger diameter but still take up less space than a conventional type. Second hand both the MC and calipers go for about the same on fleabay so it'd be a choice which to try first. If you do buy a race type radial MC though it may not have a brake light switch fitment so that'd be an issue, but not a big one.
Yes is simple the answer. Big improvement over the std, plus they look std if that is something you want to keep.
I converted to non-radial P4 4 pad calipers on my 916SPS some years ago. They are much better than the standard 996 calipers. NOTE: 916/996SPS do not have P4 calipers as standard. Using the same Bendix MF pads, I cannot tell the difference in braking feel/power between the non-radial P4 4 pad calipers on my 916 compared to the radial P4 4 pad calipers on my 749R (this agrees with Mr.R above). I would not recommend installing 848 forks and calipers due to cost/hassle and limited benefit compared to non-radial P4 4 pad calipers. Also, if the 848 has original standard 2 pad radials on it they are basically wooden feel/awful power (same as on my M1100S - terrible!). SUMMARY: get non-radial P4 4 pad calipers plus new braided lines and you'll be reet. R
