Datatag... Worth The Money To Register Or Not?

Discussion in 'Ducati General Discussion' started by JohnnySea, Jun 17, 2020.

  1. Just bought a new bike and it comes with DataTag but needs to be registered with I think is £15. Seems cheap but what do you get for your money? Any experiences / views appreciated.

  2. Data Tag is often requested by insurance underwriters as condition of insurance. To my knowledge it does nothing until your bike is stolen and parts start appearing on eBay. If my memory serves, the latest version has little un powered transponders that react to a scanner and identify the person who registered it. I have it on my V4 but not by choice. Andy

  3. It also help police find the original owner if bike found with no identity marks, but by then you’ve probably been paid out and it’s not your bike anymore anyway?

It’s fitted to my bike but when I got it there wasn’t any Datatag paperwork supplied with it and I can’t find any identification marks on the bike anywhere besides the go away sticker so not sure I can re register it even if I wanted to?

  4. Try a UV light source over the frame etc, there are usually 2 sets of numbers you can locate with this method.

  5. Send me your email and I’ll send you the reregistration form.

  6. I think three of my bikes have been Datatagged, It seems to work

  7. With that vast sample of five I have sent in my £15 for registration. Thanks all.

  8. I registered mine for the sake of £15. I paid I little extra for a posh sticker, think it was £2

  9. Yeah, I’ve got the sticker. The previous owner was kind enough to pass it on. Think I’ll hide it under the seat or something like that. I’m thankful for the additional security but I’m not quite sure the sticker adds to the overall look of the bike.

  10. I put my sticker on the head stock where some cables route. Thought it may stop wear over time from the cables rubbing.

  11. Brilliant idea. When I'm not on a motorbike I ride bicycles as well and they have these clear stickers they produce to stop brake and gear cables from rubbing on your frame. It's a good idea. Admittedly I've never considered using them on one of my motorbikes.

  12. It's called helicopter tape. Comes in various thicknesses/durabilities...

  13. I had no idea. Thanks.

  14. I discovered that my 2016 bike had never been registered (at all, not just to me) a few months ago, it was an ex dealer demo. Didn't cost anything to register when I got in touch with datatag...

  15. Well they’ve wised up to that. There’s no getting away with it anymore.
