Hi , so I’m in need of changing the gasket on my 2000 900ss. The reason it needs changed is the previous owner must’ve used RVT or some gasket sealant in addition to the gasket leaving gaps now I have an oil leak. Is there any product orders that I need to use with the gasket when I replace it? Or literally just throw the gasket in and bolted up? Also does anyone know of any tie ups or problems that can arise when changing. Seems to me it’s extremely simple I don’t even need to use a fly wheel puller I think I can just go around with a screwdriver Carefully and loosen up the covers slowly. or would a flywheel puller (as recommenced) be better ? Thank you
I’m not sure because they sell the gasket for the alternator cover. I read so many different explanations on the correct way to do this.
Ducati don't sell the gaskets any more, they changed to using three-bond : California Cycleworks are currently out of stock of gaskets your side of the pond as I am here in the UK, they are due in to CCW next week. If using gaskets I always use a thin smear of grease on both surfaces.
Ok so you’re pretty much telling me I should just go purchase the three bonds and use that as opposed to hunting down and finding the gasket? Which I’m fine with I just really wanna know what the best thing to do is. specially before a drain oil and take that cover off. Can’t wait to get rid of the stupid Leak
Oh and than you for info. My Ducati dealership hasn’t called me back about the gasket so I’m just trying to drive out there and see if they have that sealer My Ducati dealership hasn’t called me back about the gasket so I’m just trying to drive out there and see if they have that sealer If not supposedly it’s just as good to go to the auto parts store and buy a comparable RTV sealer?
Heresy, if someone did use RTV that's probably why its leaking, RTV does not bond to the alloy that well unless it is very very clean, the threebond material dries to a light grey and could be mistaken for a normal silicon sealant. A fine bead of it is a pretty reliable sealing method if it is applied to a cleaned and oil free surface. The tube will last a while and can be used for nearly all the gaskets on the crankcases and covers. RTV is a stop gap and should be avoided unless you are happy to redo the joint sooner than necessary.
Thank you. I have a small leak right behind my slave cylinder. I really don’t wanna have to tear the whole thing open just to fix it but it’s a pretty bad leak I would rather do a temporary seal but I think I’m just gonna redo the whole seal because it doesn’t seem like there’s really much involved at all besides removing the slave cylinder and the shifter
If you are taking the alternator cover off there is a screw in the region of the clutch slave that frequently gets filled up with chain grease and goes unnoticed - if you try to remove the cover without removing this screw the alternator cover cracks. Do not ask how I know. You will probably need the puller to get the cover off the alternator, if you try just levering with screwdrivers you are probably creating next weeks leaks from the cover. The pullers are less than £10 on e bay.
I got one that works for all vehicles for 15 bucks at Harbor freight! I don’t think they have those Stores in Europe.
Heresy does your puller look like this or have the adjustment required to fix as shown in the inset photo?
