V4 First Track Day - Need A Short-shifter

Discussion in 'Panigale' started by GTT, Jul 3, 2020.

  1. Hi Guys,

So LOVED my first day on The V4 at Doni, despite it being a Redflag-Fest.... More "Get Offs" than a London bus! There was one Inters session where there was a red after the first lap, another red 2 laps after the re-start and then another red after 4 laps of the next re-start!!!!!!

Due tho the crash fest and it pissing down all morning I didn't get as many laps as hoped for but I must say I am seriously impressed.. Agility was off the scale for such a chunky bike compared to my RSV4 but who doesn't love a big bird?? Power delivery was insane, I thought she was going to rip my bloody arms off.

Only issue so far, the gear selection.. It's just too damned long and too vague. I love my lever to be like "Clunk/Bang/Go" in 1/2 an inch of movement but this thing is an inch+ of freeplay than another 1/2 inch of selection that has no positivity about it at all. I played with the selector shaft and lever but the freeplay is in the input shaft selector Pivot, anyone else feel this????

I know that Lightech do a shorter pivot for the Ape/Yam/Honda but not the Duke, does anyone or does anyone else have another fix?? Is it the Kill Time of the QS?? I checked 4 different V4's with 4 different rearsets and they are all the same.

This is the kinda thing that can fk-up a relationship, it's like a super hot woman with the brains of Stephen Hawking and a body to match that leaves the lid off the toothpaste tube... You just can't get over it...

Some one save this love affair..... please... :broken_heart:

  2. May be as simple as a change in where the lever sits. Maybe take off the spline, move one tooth up/down which ere you think and try that

  3. Thanks Bradders, tried that but the freeplay is both up & downshifts so its actually in the G/box. The input shaft moves from 12 O'clock to 1 before 1st up-shifts are engaged and 11 before down-shfts.. I need to shorten the throw of the lever/pivot I think.

  4. wow that sounds a long way! May not be but sounds it.

Is the QS & slipper adjustable for cut time?

  5. i know it sound long and it feels it to me but all the other V4 guys i was with were like " Thats how they are.."

Its the standard QS so I don't believe it's adjustable to us mere mortals...

  6. I’d not thought about it to be honest! I think mine is slicker than midge and his mates! I would say it’s even better than my R1 with trans logic shifter/blipped! Maybe you just need to get used to it??

  7. Could you get used to your new girl always making tea and leaving the bag in the worktop??

  8. I know I know... its petty but it just bugs me... There must be a solution.

  9. Haha! It’s not petty! It’s important to have it the way you want it! As for tea bags on the worktop! I’d push her in the bloody stingers!

  11. 44703F34-2587-45CF-B47A-08BFAF63659A.jpeg Change the front actuating lever to one from a 1299 or similar. Its shorter than the one on the V4. I looked at replacement rear-sets or gear lever to reduce lever throw but the vital dimension on all of them was the same.

  12. I was there too. Didn’t have a great day. As you say it pissed down all morning.
Just completed the out lap after lunch and all hell broke loose on my dash.... Looks like the gear sensor is fooked. All electronics went to limp mode and bike was almost unridealbe. Weird. Interesting experience though. Anyhow, packed up at this point and fooked off.

Now. I’ve run stock qs with Rizoma Ducati rearsets. The rearsets you get on the Speciale. I’ve done 1750 track miles and up until last Thursday it’s all been perfect. I’m currently fitting a new gear sensor, HM quick shifter and 520 gauge chain and sprockets. I’ve booked Donington again next Thursday. Weather looks better at the moment. Fingers crossed the bikes ready :):upyeah:

  13. Boom !!! that's the fucker. Thanks Razz, I'even toyed with fabricating one last night (not me Obvs) but that is exactly what I'm taking about. The shorter distance from Pivot center to QS bolt hole means the lateral distance is reduced for the same shaft rotation...

    Watch this space!!!

  14. I did come to try and find you to say Hi but as you say, it was a shocker of a day. I got my 2 sighting laps in on the first session of the day and just as I came round Melbourne EML & Traction lights went nuts.. Came in, did a soft reset cleared the codes and the heavens opened...

Can you believe how many Red flags there were?? The 2 main reasons i stopped doing UK days, fooking rain and Wallys. Were you there when the guy piled into the back of the Instructor Glyn?? Mangled the back of his £50k R1... Not a happy bunny!!!

I'm not out again now until the 4th Aug, again at Doni..

  15. Eeek!!! No, think I’d packed up and gone by then. But I heard about it on the forum.
Yeah, loads of prangs. No momentum at all. I’m same as you, mainly do euro gigs. Much prefer them. Just wanting some track time. I’ll try again next Thursday if my bikes ready :):upyeah:

  16. Don’t get shite like that with a Beemer me ol bean

  17. True, you just get leaky cheap brakes, cracking wheels and less character than my washing machine.

  18. I had the same issue when moving from my GSXR 750 to my 899. An expensive solution but I went for a Blip Box Pro as it uses a load cell sensor rather than the crap spring loaded switch in the standard QS which has helped. Unfortunately it still hasn’t got the slick mechanical clunk of the 750. I’m not sure if seen that HM are doing a load cell shifter for the V4?

  19. I’ve got one of these for my V4S. Fitting it next week with some other bits and bobs...http://hmquickshifter.com/shop/ducati/ducati-oem-replacement-blipper-shifter/
