1098R seat unit finally fitted

Discussion in '848 / 1098 / 1198' started by Argonaut, May 5, 2012.

  1. Took a while but I finally got it done!

Had to compare both the 848Evo and 1098R parts manuals, as there are around a dozen important parts to be ordered that are specific to the 1098R seat unit.

Installation took a very unhurried 20minutes, quite an easy job for a change!

Very happy with the end result, glad I went to the expense and effort now.

Now then......what's next on my list whilst the weather is pants!

  2. Very nice. Love the tric colours. How much are we talking about?

  3. What parts did you have to order? It looks just the same as my DP carbon one that was just a straight swap. Or does it have different mountings? Does look sweet though.

    Matt

Just noticed that the cowl doesn't remove. How does it attach to the sub- frame?

  4. 1098R subframe is different compared to non-R models. Did you have to change the 848 subframe to mount the seat unit?

  5. oooooooooo Shweet...

  6. Ok gents, in answer to all your questions:

Price – I’m not saying how much I paid for the seat unit itself, but it was a lot less than the £2500 Ducati wanted for it. It’s a genuine 1098R seat unit, as confirmed by Moto-Rapido.

The riders seat cover is from Saxon seats – Think it cost me about £60 plus a car upholsterer to fit it, along with 18mm of extra padding to make it a little more comfortable! Looks really good but is rather slippery.

Parts needed to fit the seat unit are:

Total cost for the above parts was £237.70

The most expensive part was the padded seat backing, which cost an eye-watering £168.77!!!

The seat backing is removable, it’s held firmly in place by two rubber bungs which fit into the carbon fibre unit itself (the whole seat unit is carbon fibre, even internally for the cubby-hole storage space), the seat backing is secured at the top by a Dzus quick-release fastener, which was a pain to fit as it’s a little too short, and doesn’t easily make contact with the retaining clip, which I had to modify (which in plain-speak means I butchered it to fit properly).

So, yes you can access the cubby storage area, and thankfully it’s a lot bigger than a standard seat unit storage space, so now I can get the tool kit, disc lock and wallet and visor cleaning kit in there.

    Subframe:

The 848 and 1098R subframes only really differ in materials (1098R Subframe is aluminium – so I’m lead to believe) and the 848 is steel. Plus the 848 has pillion peg mounting fittings, whereas the 1098R doesn’t.

The geometry of it all is the same, so are the fixing holes etc (with the exception of pillion peg mountings).

The light unit is the same, but has a couple of different fittings, which look a little like paddock stand bobbins. They create a spacer between the light unit and the seat unit, which enables it all to bolt together properly.

The seat unit fits on easily enough, locks onto the undertray in the same manner and was generally a pleasure to fit. There are however two rearward mounting screws which fit into two more “bobbins” I’ve mentioned above, which were impossible to screw in, as there are no holes to access them through the undertray (848 and 1098R undertray are the same), and you need the undertray in place to fit the seat unit!

In the end, after much head-scratching, and considering if I needed to remove the exhaust cans, I came up with a simple solution which works well - I just fitted a closed-cell self-adhesive 3mm thick foam to the upper side of the mountings, which the bobbins would sit on, and be relatively well secured and damped from vibrations.

Not ideal, but it works well and there is no movement or creaking from the unit, which seems to suggest it’s happy in place.

I’m very happy with the unit; it’s considerably lighter than the standard 848 kit and with the painted white race plates on it, looks the part.

It’s a nice mod to make, visually makes a difference and saves a bit of weight.

  7. Same for me, the cubby hole is bigger so can get more stuff in. Top tip- Line it with something as I didn't for the first few months and the laquer got worn a little bit.

  8. Looks very noice!

  9. What a fantastic mod - I think it looks fantastic :upyeah:

  10. Looks excellent mate, worth the effort and the....expense :)

Guess the rain is good for us to get some bike related jobs done (think positive)

  11. Thanks Maccaa, i just wish this weather would sort itself out........however it's pretty irrelevant at the moment as i've just spent most of the day in A&E only to be told i've broken three small bones in my gearchanging foot.....curses, curses! :frown:

  12. Nice

what's the seat like you have on there. Slippy like oem or better ?
My neoprene is looking a little worn

  13. Nice bike and nice mod!! Just wondering as to why you changed the seat??

  14. Shit...! How did you do that?
Not dropping yr purse on yr foot I bet, after project seat!

  15. Ouch !! How did you do that?

On a positive note the rest of the forum will now book their annual hols, cause as you are "laid up" the weather is bound to be great for the next 6 weeks

  16. It's as slippery as the OEM one, but the extra padding is very nice!

    Got it from Saxon Seats

  17. A small incident on a construction project whilst visiting a client. Nothing major but I can barely walk at the moment.

And......typically, it's bright sunshine today! You had to say it Maccaa didn't you!
