My D16 basically has the same dash as a 1098/1198. Put the bike away last night all was fine, got it out this morning and the dash had a crack in it, which has grown as I rode the bike due to vibration. It's out of warranty, but will send Ducati an email and see what they have to say.
Have sent email to Ducati Italy, so we will see. Annoying thing is its only the plastic lens, which, assuming the dash comes apart should be easy to replace.
I have read of this happening before a while ago but cannot remember what forum it was on. I 'think' that they got it replaced, blame it on misting up all of the time which has eventually caused the crack, that is a recall.
this was annoyingly common on the monster analogue clocks, ducati/magnetti marelli wouldn't supply just the lens, only fix was new set of clocks at £450_ bad enough on a 6k bike, i'd be livid on a 40k bike hopefully they will sort you out
Mine mists. Found some info on another forum which seemed to say that in the UK replacement fronts were available under warranty for 1098 so hopefully I'll get some joy from Ducati.
It was an issue on 749/999s. My tacho glass just cracked overnight one day. Luckily I had a week left on my warranty and it was replaced. There were similar threads on Ducatisti a few years back.
Seem to recall that being in direct sunlight and the curved glass was acting like a magnifying glass being a factor in the cracking?
I can imagine this will be mega £££ it isn't the same dash as the 1098... It has revs upto 15k from memory... So it'll be a one off.. Good luck
It's only the front cover which needs replacing, which unscrews, so whilst the innards may be different (though I doubt it, just re programmed) the case is the same as far as I can tell. The sunlight/double bubble screen explanation is often mentioned in relation to cracking, but to be honest I'm not sure i believe that as an explanation, and yesterday was sunny, but not that sunny.
Still waiting for Ducati to get back to me to see if I can get it done for free, but good news is I can get just the front cover and lens from Ducati Coventry, so not the end of the world.
My 749 did it on the speedo glass. Ducati didn't want to know, but then it was 3-4yrs out of warranty. Annoys me every time I look at it but not to the tune of £700 for a replacement.
Took the dash off the D16 this afternoon. Fairly easy job, remove all the fairing and nose cone, slide the Ecu out of the way, undo 3 bolts and a connector and it was off. Need now to buy a very small torx key to undo the screws holding the front of the dash on ( nothing I've got is small enough). Ducati wouldn't replace the part as warranty had expired on the bike (understandable I guess), but Ducati Coventry have sent me a front piece which should be with me tomorrow (Monday). Will give the fairing the bath treatment whilst its off and then she should go back together. Sadly, I've noticed that the local speed humps have scratched the bottom of the belly pan, no biggie but annoying, will polish out what I can and lacquer, its just bare carbon fibre.
Bought a set of torx drivers from Halfords. Part arrived this morning. All fitted and working. Had a look at the old one and there's no way to replace the screen within the front cover cos its sandwiched between two layers of plastic which have been glued/melted together.
They sent me a complete outer case, but I only used the front. Was hoping that I could figure out a way to replace the acrylic in the front of the old unit, but it seems impossible
A big thank you to John Burrows @ Ducati Coventry for fixing me up with a new/used case for my dash, all is now well. Was at a bike meet this morning and noticed that 848 and 1098 has same dash as mine, and that the dash screen has a bend in it at the bottom where the idiot lights are, but the later 1198s just has a flat screen. My guess is that in putting the bend into the acrylic they stressed the rest causing the cracking issue found on the 848/1098/D16. Sadly it is impossible to just replace the acrylic screen 'cos the dash front is made of two pieces of plastic glued/melted together with the acrylic in the middle of the sandwich. However, I have a cunning plan should the dash crack again. I have bought a Carbon Fibre cover which fits perfectly over the front of the dash, but is straight. If I cut out the cracked acrylic screen, glaze the back of the CF cover and then stick that over the front of the dash, it should be just about perfect. Sod's law states that now I have come up with this solution the dash will never crack again.
You could try putting the old cover in the oven for a bit (on a really low heat). I've done it with plastic headlights, if it's a similar sort of glue once they're warm enough they just pull apart.
Worth a go, although the phrase "a disaster waiting to happen" springs readily to mind. I could end up with the only Salvador Dali style dash in the country.
I only mean the lowest heat, like 110c, for a couple of minutes, if that doesn't work then it's a different sort of glue. Plastics should be fine around that temp, but put it on a piece of wood not directly on the metal grids as they can concentrate the heat. Best to do it when the Mrs is out though, they get a bit uppity when they find gearbox casings and the like in the oven.
