1260 Front Fork Issues

  1. 2018 1260s 25K miles on the clock, recently had two issues that are worth checking.

Whilst having the front tyre replaced recently (No. 5) the fitter called me over to look at the Front Brake link pipe (goes from LH calliper to the RH one). This was very worn, outer plastic cover worn away and a hole worn in the steel braiding as well, the wear was on the RH inside where it runs close / against the mudguard. Not visible unless the calliper is off and pulled back so you can see the inside part of the pipe. The link pipe was replaced under warranty and rerouted to give better clearance. One to watch out for and will be part of my checks in future!

Annual service also due and I had a metallic knocking from the front forks when they were fully extended on hard acceleration over bumps or potholes, the noise could be replicated on speed bumps in both Touring and Sport modes also the front end was feeling a bit harder than normal. I have it set to harder in Touring (plus 2 turns in on the preload) as it is used in Touring 75% of the time and I prefer the harder setting to get better feel from the front tyre. Thinking back it had been getting harder on the front for a few weeks but it was the noise that made me mention it, there were no oil leaks, the forks looked good no pitting or damage visible and no loose bolts. The service guys also had quick a look and agreed that it wasn’t right and would be done with the service. Result - two new front forks and a new front Skyhook accelerometer all under warranty - thankfully I bought have the extended warranty when I got the 1260!

The RH compression fork (the one with the Preload) was the problem, it had gone very stiff, no idea why as yet. Pressing it down off the bike they could only get about 30% compression whilst the new one they can get about 60%+ compression if you lean on it when it is off the bike but they (Ducati) replaced both forks as a set. Nice to have Skyhook back and working and it felt so much better (but too soft) until I put my preferred settings back to how I like it. I will be checking for the metallic sound occasionally from now on as well!

This is the first major issue the bike has had and the service from Ducati and the dealer was excellent. For those who do higher mileages the above points may well be worth checking. IMO the 1260S is the best Multi (so far!) and this is number 4 having had one of each previous generation. The V4 will be interesting - maybe.

  2. Ouch on the replacement forks!! Bet you’re so happy you extended!

On the running, they all seem to do that sir. My dealer adding some vinyl type protection. More because of the marks on the forks than the pipe but guess otter a lot of rubbing it will work thru.

  3. 2018 1260S with 14k km; Thanks for the heads-up. I did find some early chafing on the caliper link tube, either side of the mud guard.

When I installed the engine guards early this spring, I found similar chafing on both oil cooler lines in the vicinity of the engine radiator. I saw it since the installation instructions require addition of a tube coil protection with the side fairing removed.

  4. Front DIY tyre change will be due in a month or two, was supposed to be in the next two weeks but cancellation of my tour means I can now run current set of tyres a while longer, small mercies. Thanks for the heads-up VeeTwin, will check my hoses. Also have extended warranty but, to my shame, on less than half your miles for same age of bike.
