My 50th is fast approaching !:frown: ........and I don't ride as much as I used to. I love Ducati's but have only ever owned one (749bip). I want one more sports bike before the old joints seize up. I'v done all the trackdays that I intend to do (probably), so all I want is a bike to clean, ride in the warm weather........ and love ! I'v been looking at a 749s but have just spotted a very nice 749r on a 08 plate. The carbon versions are lovely but are getting rare and are bloody expensive ! So what's your opinion on the later plastic version ?
on an 08 plat its been kicking around somewhere for a couple of years at least before being registered....that kinda says a lot.....
They were still selling them brand new march 2007 'On Yer Bike Aylesbury' but yes you have scared me a bit ! Thanks
according to the ducati.com website 2006 was the last year of production so one for sale in a show room in 2007, even though technically its new, was built in 2006.....so on an 08 plate means its been unregistered for 2 years.....ie sitting around in a show room!
No, but the points are 1) is its old stock......2) stuff that is popular or quality or value for money doesnt hang around a show room.
if you like it and its the right price,go for it and enjoy. don't worry what anyone thinks, its your money, your taste, and your bike.
At 50 you have plenty of time to enjoy a sports bike, I am 60 and ride my 748 which is more uncomfortable and intend to ride it for a few more years yet. I spend my working life on a building site so I have plenty aching limbs and muscles. Steve
At nearly 8000 theres a lot of choice about........for example there is a 916sps at snells, similar money.....some 848s and 1098s.... let alone 2005 999s ....
You want the 2004 full carbon model, I have just got one and it is different class. So much better than my 749bip and more fun to ride than my 1098s Tricolore . I guarantee when you have ridden the full carbon model you will notice the difference.
How much more is a carbon fibre model over this bike with equivalent miles OR how many more miles to achieve a similar cost? the carbon bike will certainly hold its money better and much easier to sell when/if the time comes. Ducati like to be used it's no secret and every spanner monkey i've ever dealt with has told me this. An engine sat idle is not a good thing and how many do you know that people consciously over fill to prevent nature attacking? I'm more carefl than ever these days. Q
Bikes i think are a very personal think. This is why so many have modifications that for one person finish a bike, and for another they ruin it. If it something you like, and are happy with the price then it's the one for you. I think it will always be more special than a base version of a newer bike of similar value too.
Hi, There are a couple of Carbon R's on eBay: DUCATI 749 R (04)CARBON MODEL RED 05 REG EXCELLENT NUMBER 0532 @LOOK@ | eBay And this one has been up for quite a while so there could be some room for negotiation: Ducati Motorbike 749 R GENUINE CARBON MASTERPIECE | eBay
I've got an 04 baby r and I have to admit I just sit looking at it sometimes. I've never seen the later plastic model in the flesh but I used to own a tidy bip so I'm guessing they look similar except for the ohlins. Purely cosmetic I would imagine but if you can get a carbon one I'd go for it. The detail on the side panels is stunning.
Going from a 749 bip to a 2004 carbon R I have to say the difference is staggering. I would recommend you get a carbon faired one based on the fact the carbon looks incredible compared to standard bodywork, some of the detailing is spot on and you will never be dissapointed. I rode a panagale the other day and was happy to get back on the R without that feeling of dissapointment. the black of the carbon makes the paint look such a deeper colour compared to plastic fairings, I had both my bikes side by side and the R looked so much better. Every time the cover comes off it makes me smile like an idiot
I had a look at a later plastic 749r about a year ago at Hyside motorcycles near Romford. It looked absolutely stunning. I also met a bloke on a 999r a while back who said that stone chips on carbon fairings were a bit of an issue !
