I've removed some awful tank grips from the bike, the rubber came off fine but left the sticky backing in place. Whats the best way of removing the backing without damaging the paintwork?
Depends on the glue but try (in no particular order but my go to is petrol): WD40 Petrol Acetone (nail polish remover - not the acetone free stuff) Furniture polish Finish off with a good polish and wax. Heat may also help.
I wanted to remove some tougher stickers used to attach number plates to my painted car bumper. I tried WD40 and that didn't budge the stubborn glue at all - killed my fingertips trying (slight exaggeration). I then borrowed my wife's hair drier and applied some heat and the sticky remains just rolled off easily.
a bit of heat from a hairdryer wd40 and patience you can also get some "zoff" plaster adhesive remover, mosts chemists will have it
You can also try Zippo lighter fluid. Great for cleaning kinds of residue. Doesn't damage or do anything to the paint.
