848 engine management light

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by Duke of Essex, Jun 5, 2013.

  1. I keep getting the engine management light come up, it only happens when im traveling about 30mph or below, ive not noticed what gear im in when it happens.

i can turn the ignition off and on again and it clears, do the coil packs throw up the management light ?

    any other ideas ?

    cheers guys

  2. Not really only the lambda will show that you have incomplete combustion and that will throw the light on and you will know that the bike is not running right. Have you checked the servo motor exhaust cables? if one has snapped then the servo will throw the light up as it cannot find it's home position. Is your battery and connectors in good condition?

  3. Bike also has coil a and b errors on the ecu, not checked the servo cables
, had the covers off to the battery at the weekend with ducatidiag to check everything which is why I asked about the coil packs

  4. I'm pretty certain the coil does throw the cel light on and as you say ducatidiag will be able to check the bikes error log, each coil gives a different code.

Try disconnecting a coil stick from the 3 pin plug and check if the light comes on......

  5. If it were the servo there would be an entry in the log for that......but if it is don't pay for a new cable or servo, just get the writer software from JP the author of ducatidiag and re flash the Ecu to remove the check for the servo junk....

Or give ChrisW a shout on here he's your man if you want someone to do it for you.

  6. When the light comes on, are you getting a misfire? The ignition relays are notorious for giving up the coil errors. For a few quid, it's worth changing and clean up the connector at the same time.

  7. AS Nelly says, try the cheap stuff first.

However, other forum members have previously reported intermittent MIL's on the dash caused by the EXBV servo motor, sticking cables and sticking BV.

  8. If you get the light on permanently, rather than key off push the mode switch up and you should get an error code displayed on the dash. That at least gives you a start. Failing that, get the error history read out at your dealer.

  9. No, no misfire.

The first error I saw was at ignition on, it threw up an exup error across the screen then after less than a mile the EML came on so I stopped and switched off and on again, had a mate check it out with ducatidiag and it had a host of faults EXUP being just one of them,
Had coil Pack A coil pack B errors, lamba error and crank sensor error however I have just bought the bike so don't know if the errors were because something had been disconnected at some point in its past.

We cleared the errors and started up but the coil pack errors came back.

  10. If it's throwing up multiple codes then it may be worth checking voltage

  11. Cables turned up in the week so I will be looking closely at the faults, I've checked voltage and its charging at 14.4v (idling)

I know with the DP ecu you can unlock them for higher function, is this possible with the stock ecu?

  12. The stock and DP ECU's are the same Magneti Marelli IAW5AM, it is just the mapping that is different. A stock can become a DP and vice versa. I have an IAW5AM ECU from a Hypermotard fitted to my 2003 999, flashed to the correct map. Good thing about the later bikes is that there is no immo in the ECU to complicate matters.

This is a list of the fresh faults on the ecu.

  14. If my bike starts behaving strangely the first thing I replace is the injector/coil/fuel pump relay (cheap as chips off eBay).

Came across an 848 with fan error code recently, turned out to be a blown fuse, so worth a check.

  15. If I perform the fan test in ducatidiag fan 1 doesn't work.

Are the relays common or Ducati parts only ?

  16. The single fan thing is a known problem in Ducatidiag. It works on both fans on my 999 but only one on my 1198.

You can actually manually input the test numbers by entering them in the box and clicking ON

  17. Excellent thanks,

i'll change the relays and see what happens.

  18. Any idea on where the three relays are ?

  19. Right hand side of the Battery box - Fr = Fans, R = Fuel Pump/Injector/coils (I believe)

  20. Thanks Chris, I've changed them both and reset faults so let's hope it's all good.

I've tested everything with ducatidiag but I can't get fan 1 working, both fans work but clicking on fan 1 does nothing and neither does putting in the code.

Is there a low and high speed fan or just 1 speed on an 848?
