Monster 600 2001 Showa Fork Height

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by richardh, Nov 18, 2020.

  1. Hi all,
Just bought my 600 monster 2001
With showa non adjustable front forks
I'm trying to find the specific height above the top yoke but my manuals only show marzochhi settings
    Can anyone help please
    Thank you

  2. Iirc they are normally flush as standard. What does the manual say, it wont be much if any different

  3. My manuals for the monster describe marzochhi forks as fitment and 279mm from below the lower fork yoke up to the top of the tube.
But nothing related to the showa forks at all.
I'm aware that the showa were fitted to a certain batch of 2001 monsters, but really like to know the correct original settings

  4. OK, cheers
This links gives me anywhere from 5 to 7mm and then around 20mm
    Thank you
Any more ideas anyone? I know they can be tweaked to suit but nice to start somewhere original.

  5. Well,
Still on the trail of the correct height of the Showa forks above the top yoke.
227mm I've found but still uncertain , so written to some nice person hopefully in Bologna.
See if I get a reply.
It may seem daft , but I've always worked on a starting point first . 20201119_090555.jpg

  6. I wouldn't mind betting that that set-up figure varied slightly ex-factory even when new.
    Here's a factory "new" pic:-

  7. Thank you for the pic.
When I enlarge the pic, it seems to be sticking out a good way for sure .
They look like Showa as well , the only difference is the extra disc and caliper

  8. it's ripe with controversy Richard, and I risk many reaching for the can-opener, but do you like your bikes to respond quickly/more quickly to a steering input than not (often associated with the term "turn in")? It sounds as though you might be happy in this area already but just asking. Main trade-off if you do (as you probably know) is less stability at trickling speeds but I think virtually everyone gets used to this, and some hardly notice it, but a massive "grey area" none the less. I remember a similar dilemma with car geometry, an even bigger can o' worms than bikes.

  9. Hi Chris,
Thank you for these thoughts and ideas.
I suppose I like things to be correct from factory , as they'd have tried lots of settings before settling for a particular set of settings.
Maybe I'm easily pleased , but the 10mm or so that I have seems to go round corners as nicely as I need.
During my bike's previous life it's had a few owners , one of which was a lady who could have dropped the forks during her ownership.
I'm just trying to go back to starting settings really.
When I can get out more , we'll try again.
    Thanks though.

PS as you say, there may not be such a setting as standard !

  10. Ime ‘correct from factory’ is miles away for correct for me. Weight, riding style, type of roads or track all factor in. It’s a good place to start for sure if it’s new to you but if you like how something rides, that’s ‘correct’ imho :)

  11. For the M900 with non-adjustable Showa forks, the manual says 279mm from underside of bottom yoke to top of fork tube (Not nut).

The Showa adjustable forks are longer hence the bigger protrusion at the top, keeping the axle in the same place.

  14. that's more like it. :upyeah:

  15. Time to set front and back static sag now!

  16. Wow that’s a long way thru. Only seen them that far when fitting the longer SS forks on a monster

  17. I haven't been able to even ride it to check yet!
As soon as we can get out , I'll find out I'm sure!

  18. yep, controversial.. I changed the last M750 I had by about the same amount - see how you get on, it's a personal thing.

  19. Risk is reduced ground clearance. Not sure if the front wheel can foil the cylinder
