We Have Had Nominations For Best Drummer, Now ......

Discussion in 'Lounge' started by Android853sp, Jan 7, 2021.

  1. Danny carey (underrated)
    Lars Ulrich (overrated)

  2. I wouldn’t put Prince as a great drummer, I would however put him as one of the greatest musicians of ALL time. The guy was incredible in all aspects of what he did, both writing and playing. If he wanted to be the best drummer I’m sure he could have been; equally could have been the greatest modern song writer, guitarist or even choreographer. Instead we got the the best all rounder from him. Sheila, I could watch that all day...

  3. I agree. That post was just a follow up from the Shelia E one. :upyeah:

IIRC, he placed pretty high in a guitar mag survey a while back though.

    Not bad on bass either.....

  4. His guitar playing was exceptional, genuinely, in my opinion, one of the greatest of all time simply because of his creativity. He wrote as he played

  5. I thought that was Phil Collins :)

  6. If you wanna see Prince doing great things check out YouTube and enter: music hall of fame tribute while my guitar gently weeps. If you’re a Prince fan it’s a must see. Various artists performing the George Harrison classic.

  8. That clip has been posted a few times on the ‘what music are you listening to thread’, it’s a brilliant clip. Do you have any idea where the guitar lands after Prince throws it up in the air?

  10. Chill fella .... I was just joshing with you ....

Be inspired , aim high ..... in these times more than ever !

I'm currently being inspired by Cecilia Notto who has totally mastered this fabulous Weather Report tune

Pity about the drummer though ..... somebody should have told him to be quiet
    .... he thinks he's a star , but he's sadly mistaken

  11. Please refer to post 10 :)

Prefer Tommy Gun but he is a great drummer.

    A little interview.

  12. Stewart Copeland sits under the radar.

  13. Toppers drug issues caused the band many problems. When Strummer and Jones went their different ways that was the end of the Clash IMO.

It broke my teenage heart :joy:

  14. Yes not because it affected his performance it was more the bands anti-drug stance, strummer couldn’t reconcile the contradiction from what I recall of an interview he gave.

Broke mine when my partner rang me to tell me Joe Strummer had passed away......

  15. Certainly not a one trick pony,Don Henley with this great number.

  16. Performing so perfectly, in pouring rain, on a wet and shiny Perspex stage while wearing high heels only confirmed that he was an alien IMO!

Here’s a slow grungy, churning and heavy version of Let’s Go Crazy

And him and his band on stage with the lovely Shelia E and her band in 1986. There must have been 20 musicians playing (including 2 drummers so the thread isn’t OT!) yet its still incredibly tight.

  17. Has anyone nominated Clyde Stubblefield (ex James Brown’s band) yet?

If nothing else, he was probably the most uncredited yet most prolific drummer as there must be literally thousands and thousands of tracks which sampled his riffs.

  18. Not sure. But his hat ended up in my old avatar pic

According to this article he threw it to his guitar tech, who then handed it to a “dumbstruck” Oprah Winfrey, who in turn has since given it back, and it’s now in the museum at Prince’s former studio complex, Paisley Park.

That’s a hell of a gift though, as he’d had that Telecaster (oddly, a Hohner copy of the Fender model) since at least 1979 as it appears in promo shots and here in a live performance from around that time of one of my all time favourite songs. And to avoid (entirely fair) accusations that I’m spamming the thread with OT clips, I’m nominating the drummer Bobby Z as “most underrated” because he often used to play while standing up. ;)

  19. By all accounts his guitar tech Takumi Suetsugu was in charge of catching it in the front row and then handing it to Oprah Winfrey as a gift. ( She gets all of the best gifts ).
