I have had the right hand side LED indicators pack up on my 2004 Monster. The left hand side works fine so the flasher relay is working (located in instrument pod I believe?) Two weeks ago I replaced the old small LEDs fitted by the previous owner and installed a nice pair of new Oxford 'Jupiter' LEDS. Within a few days the right side stopped working. There are resistors already fitted to both sides. The rear LED stop light/indicators are in an integral unit. I've checked fuses and wiring etc/removed and reinstalled the right front LED and also fitted a new handlebar switch (original Ducati part) as the existing one felt like the right position was a bit 'notchy'. Still not operating on the right hand side......when with operated right there is a slight glow from the green indicator lamp on the instrument pod. I have some Oxford resistors I bought as a precaution in case the existing resistors were shot.....perhaps this should be my next move? Any suggestions?.....thanks!
Swopped the new LED for the old one....no joy. Swopped the existing resistor for a new Oxford one...no joy. Multimeter test on the indicator terminals shows power when indicator switch activated 'right'. Left side working perfectly. Its weird......
Odd that the left side works but not the right. As you know the indicators are driven directly from the dash with separate outputs for front right, rear right, front left and rear left indicators. Measuring a voltage at the indicator terminal doesn't mean much if there is no load. Try swapping at least one of the RH LEDs with a bulb and see what the result is. If the bulb doesn't light up, and hopefully flash, the fault lies in the dash.
Derek....as suggested I have just tried connecting a conventional 5w lamp across the right hand front indicator wires and activated 'right' on the indicator switch but no luck alas If the fault lies in the dash is it likely to be something like a disconnected/broken wire or two or something wrong with an electronic component?
5W is a bit small for an indicator bulb, they are usually 10W, but it should still light up. It sounds to me like the fault lies within the dash and is most likely a failed electronic component. I would think you have 2 options, get the dash repaired if possible, or wire in a conventional flasher unit. If you end up having to fit a conventional flasher unit it will mean altering the wiring to fit it but I can give you some guidance.
Thanks Derek...the 5w lamp lit up well on other live items so should have indicated if power ok. Can I ask if the LED information on the dash display has any error codes? Probably a bit early perhaps for such a thing in 2004? Interesting regarding the suggested flasher unit...I rather assumed due to the fitted resistors that it was already a non-LED type relay....there is however no 'ticking' sound evident as per a conventional flasher relay. Thanks very much for your assistance and offer of help.....much appreciated!
I wanted to add this that I put those like generic LED lights in the front of my 900 SS to be turn signals When I put the left turn signal on it doesn’t light up on my dash but the left and right turn signal link at the same time in the front. No if I try to use the right turn signal it works fine No if I try to use the right turn signal it works fine Through all of this my rear turn signal indicator’s which are not LED work absolutely fine Through all of this my rear turn signal indicator‘s which are not LED work absolutely fine I checked everything wiring harness is the bulb on the dash I checked everything wiring harness is the bulb on the dash Funny thing is when I first installed those lights it worked fine for like a couple months. Also I noticed RPMs affect how it works and sometimes it switches in the left one is the one that works in the right one is the one that does not have an indicator light and makes both of the left and right turn signals blink at the same time. Frogging wierd
This is almost unintelligible! I have no idea what you are trying to say. I've been telling people about that for years. It is not the cause of the OP's problem.
I read H's contribution Derek but I too don't think it relates to my particular problem, interesting as it is! I'm considering sending the whole instrument pod to an electrical specialist in Leicester UK who may be able to isolate the cause of the problem.
The company in Leicester have got back to me but say they have never heard of this one side problem. Other option is complete new /working dash but very expensive and would need all other ECU related bits and bobs, keys, etc.....
A cheaper alternative would be to get a used dash and have the immobiliser requirement removed from your ECU. That would allow you to use the same locks and keys. Chrisw on here should be able to help with the ECU.
Another much cheaper option than a new dash etc, would be to recreate a flasher circuit using a traditional flasher relay. I nearly ended up doing this on my 1000SSie, but managed to fix the internal component failure on the PCB/A that was stopping the indicator idiot light working. If you can strip the dash down it would be worth checking to see if you can see anything obvious. On my 1000SSie dash PCB/A the load resistor for the Indicator warning LED had fallen off completely, and the one for the high beam warning light, which also didn't work, had lifted one end. 1/2hr with a soldering Iron and a massive magnifying glass had some new components fitted that are pence from the likes of RS or Farnell. Nasher.
I already suggested this. See post #6 Certainly worth a look but could need electronic skills to diagnose the problem.
The right side LED indicator problem seemed to be sorted then reared its head again recently. It seems that the instrument pod is the probable culprit so the unit is currently on its way to a specialist for examination & repair. Fingers crossed!
