Suspension

  1. I have just bought a new twin spark Multistrada without skyhook and all the electronics. I have had all the manual settings front and rear set at the half way point during PDI. Is there anybody out there who understands suspension with the new Multi set up. I am 14 stone and its only me on sunny gentle ride outs.
    thanks guys and galls

  2. I've just bought the 1200abs model without skyhook too. I was finding the front was diving under braking which I didn't like. Today I tried upping the compression on the front. Book says 1.5 turns but I tried 5 and it made a huge difference. Don't know if this info helps at all or if this is what your after but I thought it may help in some way.

  3. Thanks PHILLIPO. Which adjuster is that, the big or small on the top?

  4. The big 22mm I think.

  5. Should set your loaded SAG first , which is the amount of suspension travel used up when the bike settles with a rider on board , for these bikes 50 - 60 mm is a good rule of thumb . then adjust C & R to your liking .

  6. The compression adjuster on front forks is normally the screw adjuster at the bottom of the forks....sounds like you've adjusted the front preload to me....

  7. No wonder its not diving as much!!

  8. I was thinking the same thing. Was going to get it sorted after first service. I'm not sure which bits to adjust so was going to get it done by someone who knows what they are doing. That said, the advice here is good. Is it an easy job?

  10. I actually adjusted inner spring preload. Which gave me a sag reading of 55mm. So now I'm going to play with the rebound and compression settings.

  11. I suppose this post is an advert for Skyhook but I have gone from a S Touring to the new ABS model. Been out today for a first ride, all my settings are at half way. During the ride I backed off the rear shock by 5 clicks and for my type of ridding I will leave everything else alone for now as the replies already to my original question tell me I do not understand it all.
One thing is for sure the front end is so much quieter, I did have the Ohlins rattle which I was debating wheather to have the whole front end stripped down or not.

  12. I decent suspension guru will get your suspension working almost as well as the skyhook set up.

TBH i have just done 420 miles on mine to the Isle of Man over the weekend and the suspension works extremely well for me. Personally i like the forks to dive a bit on the brakes so i can feel for the tyre gripping at the front.

  13. Richard, basically all the preload adjusters should do is make it so the suspension neither bottoms out or tops out. i.e. it doesn't hit the stop at the top of the stroke or the bottom of the stroke and so is working within the specified fork travel range.

And all the compression and rebound adjuster do is control the rate at which the spring compresses and the rate at which it rebounds as the spring unloads.

  14. Alpha Suspension Set-Up sorted mine out.
They are based in Leeds LS27 area.
    Lads name is John Sanderson.
He attends bike meets, track days etc and charges £30 i think for a bespoke set-up.
He sorted mine out & it now seems to be a lot better.

ALPHA SUSPENSION SET-UP - Welcome if you want to check the out.

  15. 2 weeks into Multistrada 1200 ownership and though I should revert back to factory settings on the suspension. I have a 2010 model without ABS, and have tried to adjust the fork preload. The manual says "To change preload of the spring inside each fork leg, turn the hex adjuster (2, fig114) with a 22mm hex wrench........
but the 22mm nut won't move. In fact the top of the fork moves if I try to unscrew it. Seems that there is no preload adjustment??
My static sag is about 60, so I would like to add a bit of preload.
    any ideas?

  16. Are you turning it the right way?

  17. They look as thought they are screwed right in (clockwise) with no thread showing. When I try to unscrew them the whole top of the suspension fork moves. I went to my friendly NON ducati dealer and he couldn't figure out either. I have had many other bikes that show the threads of the preload, so this is almost as though it has seized in or as no preload adjustment?
I will probably look for a fork rebuild when the finances allow. Any suggestions?

  18. I have used a company called kais in atherton manchester numerous times for servicing and setup on the ohlins on my mille and numerous friends on there bikes as well i would highly recommend them to anyone just depends how far away you are really?

  19. They turn clockwise increase the preload. If the whole top of the fork is moving it can only be the top nut so it must be loose anyway as the fork leg is clamped in both the top and bottom yokes.

  20. It won't turn clockwise, but anticlockwise the top of the fork starts to undo. So I have to assume they are either non adjustable or seized?
