Multistrada 1260 Front Brake Pads Removal

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by pcn1, Apr 23, 2021.

  1. Is it straight forward to pop out the brake pads on this bike ? (i.e. no silly electronic resets required etc..)
I'm asking as I'm and old school spanner man and not up to speed with the latest tech (in fact...………... I don't want to be !)

Its just they squeal a bit and the dealership said take them out and ruff the surface with some emery cloth in the first instance. That's OK as it save's me taking a day off work to run it back to them under warranty.
But If that doesn't cure it then I'll take it back to them to look at.

    Cheers

  2. Nothing fancy, no electrictrickery to worry about.. Depends on which model you have. Base can be done with caliper in situ. Pull the pins and remove pads. If it's the S, then the calipers need to come off and the pads flicked out of the caliper body. Make a note of how the rattle spring fits and be sure it goes back the same way.

  3. Nelly, Thanks for the info, yes its an S model
Would you happen to know the torque settings when re fitting the calliper's ?

    Cheers

  4. Caliper bolts 45 Nm
I always tighten them up while the wife holds the front brake on to centre it.

don’t forget to clean your bobbins.

  5. Wasn’t it a smear of copper grease on the back of the pads to stop squealing or is that a bit old school and not necessary nowadays?

  7. problem.... when I undo the caliper retaining bolts and pull the caliper back it hits the wheel rim and wont come off the disc ?

  8. From looking at a picture on EBay I'd say loosen the hose clips on the mudguard and pull the caliper upwards.

As you start to clear the disc you might need to move it outwards a little as well.

  9. The fit is extremely tight. You need to compress the pistons so you can rotate/tilt the caliper. I put a microfibre cloth between the wheel and caliper to protect both. Andy

  10. I used to tape up the rim before pushing the pads back in, then it will come off, just be careful.

  11. If they are M4 type, I wiggle the calipers in and out to push back the pads then gently sort of rotate the calipers off the disc, all the while watching out for contact with the wheel.
Works on my 1098R with 330mm discs.

  12. Thanks for the help guys.
All done now, pads out and emery clothed up, but even though I used a protective rag I still managed to take make a small scratch on one side on the rim :(
Oh well... first world problems hey ?

Take it for a spin tomorrow and see if the squeak has gone !

  13. I had the same problem from new, fitted Brembo SC pads and no problems since.

  14. Squeak still there, you hear it when riding very slowly and braking, or pushing the bike into the garage etc.
Back to the dealers for investigation. It happens every turn of the wheel, I suspect a very slightly warped disc.
