Pulsing , dragging, stiff ...........ooh err .......

1. Nope not pixie ........but I was out with her today , on the way back in the clutch started to drag and pulse , the gear lever was significantly stiffer ( up or down ) and on lightly touching the lever having just changed up it was pulsing like it couldn't make it's mind up , on or off ......... Any thoughts ??? The fluid had dropped a wee bit and darkened but I can't find any visible leaks .............any advice will be appreciated , and in the mean time here's my other slippery thang ....

2. What was it you were saying? My concentration was elsewhere.

If it's pulsing through the lever, probably not the master, slave, pipes or rod. More likely to be the clutch itself, best to take the clutch cover off, could be springs, plates basket, retaining nut, etc.

3. Cheers geeeeza ..............

4. Mmmmmmm......Pulsating.

5. Yes yes, Pulsating and stiff eh, anyway enough about, me whats up with the bike ?

6. nice undercupboard lights

7. I'd go with Basket problem too Butch, allowing uneven plate movement or something.

Maybe you have been pulling it too hard..... the clutch that is.

8. ok went out last night and the clutch started playing up again !!!!!!! it was getting progressively stiffer and the gear lever would not budge ( changing down ) unless I stamped on the bastard .....nearly home and it just seized...aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaargh theres about 10-15mm of travel then rock hard , ive tried the obvious bleed and leaks check .... release the nip on the slave and the lever will come back , do it up and its solid from 1 pump ?????? any ideas before the lump hammer and explosives come out ......

9. As I said before it's not going to be the hydraulics.

Take the slave off and check the rod it might be broken but unlikely, have a look at the slave and see if it's at the end of it's travel, I'm guessing it's going to be but that'll be because something's gone in the clutch.

Then take the clutch cover off and have a look in there.

10. Steve, the rods fine ...however if I push the rod into the pressure plate should it spin freely ????? Because it didnt and the wd came out ...clutch plates and housing look fine and the nut is fine ????????????

11. It should spin, the rod goes into the clutch socket that then fits into the bearing in the centre of the clutch, the one you can see with the cover off.

What's the bearing look like?

Can you see the end of the socket in the centre of the bearing?

12. so pushrod travel is being limited somehow and clutch not disengaging and it's happened suddenly out of the blue? This has got us all thinking - with cover off, can you see any pressure plate movement inboard when you pull on the lever? - needs above 2 mm movement to disengage. Bar a very heavily ridged basket (or even drum) this has me scratching head.

13. I have had something similar and all it was that the slave cylinder bolts had come loose from the casing. Nothing so simple for you I guess so I would go with pushrod, they do break and after that pushrod bearings followed by the whole clutch itself.

14. if pushrod breaks then more likely results in lost motion with full clutch lever travel and hardly disengaging but O.P. is experiencing lever going solid before it reaches the bar.

15. Ok.......sorted ....... Phew , right the lump hammer and explosives can go back in the draw !!!!!! Turns out the rod was to short , a fixing plate was missing , and the springs err shite ...... Quick trip to the Leeds based Ducati John and all is peachy in the pixie/butch house ..cheers John http://www.ducati-john.co.uk/contact-ducati.htm ......anyway here's a pixie shot to celebrate

16. Cannot imagine why your rod was too short.

17. There are two lengths of rod and usually it's obvious if you put the wrong one in on a rebuild, strange it found its way into your engine, I assume someone else had the clutch apart for some reason, or did you fit an aftermarket slave cylinder as these come with an adaptor that overcomes this problem if you have the shorter pushrod.

Ducati John comes highly recommended from me as well, he rebuilt my 748R engine when the main bearing went on a trackday and despite living in London I was happy to make the trek to him despite there being others who could have done the job that were much closer. He is a great guy to deal with.

18. luvly jublies

19. Not me I'm afraid ..... I've not done a thing to it ........
