This is to be a reference of outstanding roads for fast and spirited riding. Each suggestion should be a precise road description: Smalltown to Bigtown on the A999 for example and not an area like the Scottish Borders as good though the area is, it also has some bad roads. The road should be excellent in all ways, so there is not going to be a huge list and almost none in the Home Counties because of traffic. Also we don't to include what was a once wonderful such as the A57 Snake pass, now ruined by the Police controlled Nanny State. Having each suggestion separate means it can be voted tick or cross to show the level of support a suggestion has, so please do that if you have ridden it and reply with your post if you have something to add. I will start with a few.
Fight club or Vegas springs to mind here. I'm not sure it's a good idea to advertise favourite roads for fast and spirited riding. As you say below......
A fair point, but I wasn't saying it was necessary to break the speed limit. If the road is winding enough, it is perfectly possible to enjoy a fast ride without speeding. The problem comes when they put on those bloody 40mph and 50mph limits with spy cameras everywhere. Then it is game over. Time to take up stamp collecting. I don't think we are there yet.
It's a subjective post, I know some cracking roads I know wouldn't be enjoyable on a sportsbike, but on a naked they're awesome and vice versa. Maybe it might be worth stating what would be the preferred type of bike for the road?
I suggest if you think it is suitable for only a certain bike then say. I ride a Multi mostly and can enjoy roads suitable for both sports bikes and nakeds. There is a massive overlap to suit most Ducatis within the category of 'fast and spirited' riding.
South Harting to Mid Lavant B2141 (between Petersfield and Chichester), great climb up and over the South Downs, fast and smooth road surface with some great sweeping corners. Suitable for sports/naked/tourers
A little known local secret around Petersfield is the mile or so climb from Bell Hill up through an area known locally as 'Little Switzerland'. The road a couple of miles further on meets up with the A32 and is worth a small detour if heading in that direction. Just South on the A32 is Loomies. It's quite steep in places with a couple of tight turns to power out of, and goes through some lovely woodland with a big drop on one side. At the right time of year, @2weeks ago, the roadsides and surrounding woodland are so full of wild Garlic that the smell is all encompassing as you go through. Nasher.
B4494 Newbury to Wantage is a great road and deserted at times. https://goo.gl/maps/NQfpDZ9YhR2i8SH48
Kimbolton to Huntingdon via Sawtry, incorporating the B660. I loved that route so much, I did over 50k down there on 2 and 4 wheels, over the last 20 years. I live 25 miles south of Cadwell now, so have to find a new favorite road.
Are you mistaking the A57 Snake Pass with the A537 Cat and Fiddle? They both have limits but only the Cat and Fiddle has AVG speed cameras.
One thing IAM RS observing has done for me, is to get me out and explore the minor roads around where I live looking for engaging rides. This area of N Hampshire and West Berkshire has some great roads. Andy
