996 Bringing It Back To Life. 996r

  1. Have a 996R that has not been fired up for 4 years. Had full service back in May 2017 (belts etc) and did 500 miles that year then fuel tank emptied and has sat in the garage. Bike has been turned over every 2 to 3 weeks from battery that is on trickle charge. I have changed brake fluid but wonder if I should be doing more, oil, coolant etc before firing her up ?

  2. If it was me (which it isn’t). I’d do all the fluids then crank the bike without firing to get oil around the old girl.

    then fire it up properly

  3. Depends how it’s been stored - heated humidity controlled garage or cold damp concrete workshop?
Are you starting it to put it back on the road (just in time for winter)?
I’d do belts and oil (and tyre pressures) and not a lot else.

    Or not (at your peril).

  5. Bike kept in a heated garage on a ABBA stand. Brake fluid changed and pads checked, clutch also. I'm not planning to go out until next summer but just want to get a plan together on what else I should get done.

  8. I just recommissioned a 748 that had been sat a while…

Belts, valve check, oil, filter, coolant, caliper seals, suspension service, master cylinder seals, re-greased all bearings, took swingarm bolt out and greased it…you can go on and on.

I would be doing the following from what I have found it doing that work.

turn it over by hand, then…

    Belts
    oil
    Filter
    Coolant
Check all bearings, grease if required
    Check seals
Check anything that can perish, like rubber..

then as said before, turn it over with the ignition pick up disconnected to build some oil pressure, then connect and start it.

  9. Thanks for all your thoughts, had a chat with the dealership that last serviced the bike and they have said the same thing.

  10. its probably broken itself by now so ill help clear the space for you. dont throw good money after bad

  11. Why would the valves need checking if it hasn’t been used since it was serviced? Complete waste of time and money.
It’s your bike, you know the history etc, it’s been in a heated garage - I would say that belts, oil and brake fluid is all you really need.
Don’t check pads if they were ok last time. They will still be ok.

  12. I cannot see anyone has recommended to check the valves…..

I checked the valves on my 748 as it had been sat for 17 years and had limited details on history.

  13. Apologies, got the wrong end of the stick.
