Neutral Sensor Testing

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by MHRat, Dec 11, 2021.

  1. Hi

Is it possible to test a neutral sensor when it’s off of the bike?

I’d like to clean up this solder and see if the sensor is ok without refitting it.

I’m not too good on electrics obviously

  2. Just connect a meter set to read ohms or continuity across the 2 wires. When you press the plunger the meter will show either an open circuit or a short circuit depending on whether the switch is push to make or push to break. The important thing is that you see a change of state

  3. Great. Thanks Derek. Will give it a go

  4. Ok so the sensor did nothing when testing resistance. It read “1” in both positions.

I also tried a power probe and this showed a green light when the sensor was pushed in.

I put it back on the bike and nothing from the dash. New sensor time?

  5. possibly, but make sure that the wires aren't just shorting out where they have been reconnected with solder. If you can establish this, but still no change in continuity with plunger depressed, then you are right, it's time for a new switch.

  6. It's a neutral light switch not a sensor.

  7. The sensor should have 2 wires connecting to it. A red/black which should have 12V when ignition on and a blue/black that goes from there to the neutral light (these are the colours on the wring diagram I have but I can't guarantee that they are the same on your bike). Join the 2 wires togethe, with the ignition on the neutral light should light up. If it doesn't, the bulb is blown, or there is no 12V on the red/black (you can check that by trying the brake lights which are powered by the same circuit), or the neutral light isn't getting an earth. If you can get the bulb to light up when the wires are joined then the switch must be faulty.

  8. Thanks Derek

The bulb definitely works so I’ll check shorting now.

  9. Hi Derek

The bulb lights when shorting. Even back to the switch. So, I’ll be getting a new sensor tomorrow.

Thanks for bearing with me. Appreciated.

    Cheers
    Niall
