What Are Easy Engine Swaps Into 1998 Ss Frame?

Discussion in 'Supersport (1974-2007)' started by chueewowee, Dec 12, 2021.

  1. Title asks the question.

I have taken some notes from the past, but those notes includes all sort of interesting mods, so I a trying to work it out even from reading wikipaedia and, studying photos.

    1. I need a simple list of compatible engines, for consideration, to seek out, AND,
    2. Concerning converting carb model to ie, what EXACTLY is needed in terms of extra wiring and components?

Your knowledge would be immensely appreciated.

    Ta,
    John

  2. Thanks for great reply. Quite right, yes I would prefer to go for a 2v engine, and air cooled.
I should add I've a 600ss now, with single for disc, which will limit me unless going for forks too.
What engines do yo think I am limited to with single disk, would that be 750ss?

I will think about water-cooled though too, and changing forks for perhaps a more powerful engine, pricing it up.

ref. The efi question, I'm nicley informed now.

  3. Marzocch forks. I'd need the right fork leg then for dual disks, and that would do it.

  4. Would I have to go for twin exhaust, rather than 2 into 1?
Or, is the two into one collector a good flow? And if so, would a different end can be advised , say for a 900 or 1000?
I am guessing that a 2:1 flow with same exhaust can is fine for 750ss, having seen race replicas with same.

  5. Yeah, my r/s leg has no rear facing lugs at all - just the forward one for mudguard. I could find one hopefully, w/o too much difficulty.

  6. Merlin. Go on. Do it.

  7. Is that because showa are considered better handling, or more adjustable, or what?

  8. What sort of budget are you working with to achieve this swap?

  9. Check out Brads test reports and see what you can realistically achieve with tuned two valve engines. You can spend a fortune on a 900 engine and it will almost have the same power as a standard 1000ds engine.

  10. Nice one Wassy. I was thinking along those lines.....
Great reference that by the way, bikeboy's performance page. Thanks for that.

  11. Lowish. I mean I don't require anything to brag about or for racing track. SO something sensible, economical to buy as spare, to set up.

I like to maintain a good solid road bike, with excellent handling etc.... plenty of torque when required....( a powerful twin basically, for road ).
I like to go long distance at times, but not a motorway kind of tourer - 200 miles on A roads is enough, then camp.

I keep my engine in good nick. A spare engine to swap over when needed for any kind of engine rebuilding is a good plan, even if its just to re-paint and a top end overhaul. And if something bad happens.
Basically, after five years I'm well happy with riding an SS for the rest of my life.
I's not all out power I want, but I would appreciate a little more for the long hauls, and the fun.

I've already re-done my electrics, a hand built harness, the way I like it. It could easily be adapted.

Like, someone said, can take it slowly, rather than all at once, ensuring I buy what I need. But its good to have some overview, as well as narrow down the choice.

To summarise, I suppose, it means starting with the right engine (for me).
I was thinking I kind of prefer an air-cooled engine, with a bit more power, and if possible carbs, but would consider IE, no problem. I prefer to keep it as simple. Do what's necessary, for a good choice.
Even water-cooled if necessary or advisable for reliability, and not too much extra weight and mods to fit it.

  12. I agree with Sev. When I come to engine swaps you need to either set the bhp target you are aiming for and spend what it takes to get there or set a financial limit and say 'for this much money what can I get?'.

The most cost effective way to do this would be buy a complete 900ss so you have the forks, the brakes, the engine and the exhaust. Then sell the 600.

  13. Now mine! Collecting tomorrow. I'll post some more pictures as I have no idea what I have let myself in for. At that price I couldn't resist though.

  14. Nice one. Fingers crossed it all works out

  15. Excellent! just take your time, they're not very complicated and there is plenty of hard won experience on here you can tap into, best of luck with it:)

  16. Thanks. Just got it home. That first ride was amazing. Loudest bike I have ever owned and the rear wheel let go surprisingly easily in the greasy conditions. Going to lift the tank in a moment to see if someone left me some FCRs :astonished:
