LED Indicators

  1. I have tried to replace my standard rear indicators on my 08 hypermotard with LED indicators built in to the rear light unit.

    When i connected them, the tail light and brake light worked but the indicators did not flash. I added a 6 ohm load resistor across the indicator wires. The indicators started to flash but they were far too fast. I then added another 6 ohm resistor in series with the first, (on recommendation of the resistor supplier) however this did not work either.

    I went to Maplin electronics who said that the ohm resistance was to low. He asked for the wattage of the bulb, which is 10 watts. A quick equation (that went over my head) and he said 15 ohm resistors, thats what you need, one for each indicator. I connected these up across the indicator wires, but to my frustration the flash rate was still too fast. I phoned my mathematical genius at Maplin who was stunned. He told me to try both 15ohm resistors on one indicator, and that they should drop the flash rate well below the required 60 flashes per minute but it would start to point me in the right direction. So i did and the flash rate did not drop, it stayed flashing at the same rate of about 120 flashes per minute.

    Does any one know how to fix this problem?
     
  2. Is your engine running?

    I know it sounds stupid but I put led's inside my stock rear indicators and for some bizarre reason they flash fast when the ignition is switched on but flash at the correct rate when the engine is running.

    Italians and electrics.....they don't mix. :rolleyes:

    Just tried them with the engine running and still not flashing at correct rate
     
  4. I norm fit 25w at 6.5ohm they need to be connected in parallel not series?

    Two resistors in parallel are half the value and twice the wattage so your would be 20w at 7.5ohm so should be ok with two.

    Oh and afaik the dash controls the flash rate, have you gone back to stock? sometimes the dash has some funny goings on in regards to flash rate on Ducatis.

  5. Took my bike for an MOT, the tester said that my tail light with integrated indicators are illegal and it would fail its MOT, as the flashing indicator interfered with the tail and brake light. Half of the red light went out while it flashed orange! And besides the flash rate was to fast.

    Not to disappointed as the fast flash was bugging me, I decided to revert to the originals. Now they flash to fast!

    I have tried everything, resistors on and off, front and back, resistors with the original indicators and nothing !!!! They still flash to fast.

    From the above post it seems that the dash controls the flash rate is there any way to change or re-set the flash rate?
     
  6. I had some conversations with Arthur on a similar topic on my 1098. It has LEDs front and bulbs tail as standard. I then installed LEDs rear and it all worked fine, with ignition and engine running.

    I then installed the DP performance mirrors, which are LEDs as well, but I got the fast flash on ignition and normal when running. I tried installing 20 Ohm resistors no difference to flash rate. The correct way to load the circuit is to install the resistor(s) in parallel to the LED as already stated and if using more than one resistor to put the resistors in series with each other but in parallel to the LED.

    Then I finally changed the tail tidy later and installed Kellerman ultra bright LED rear indicators and the flash rate went back to normal.

    My point is that again as already stated the flash rate is governed by the dash and either the electronics inside the dash or the Canbus is causing something strange. My guess is that its not just a straight DC thing otherwise the resistor would work and some type of filter is possibly required. However without knowing the dash circuits its pretty much impossible to determine what's required. Often LEDs, both sidelights and indicators come with a little box which has to be installed when Canbus is on the bike, I think this is some form of filter, I've never had to use them. Apart from here try Ducati ms and a troll on some BMW sites may reveal more as Canbus can introduce a host of weird shit when messed with.

    When you put it back to standard I'm assuming totally as standard, correct wattage bulbs, all resistors removed and wiring as standard.

    I have never heard of resetting the dash on any of the bikes, although you could try removing one of the battery leads and leave it powered down for a few hours or even a day and repower it..............won't do any harm but the chances are slim. Secondly call the dealer and ask him the diagnositcs kit may have something clever.

    If nothing works then you are left with 2 rather stark choices
    1) New dash......................OUCH!!!!
    2) Wire in a separate flasher circuit using an electronic flash relay. It would be right PIA but shouldn't be impossible.

    I do hope you get it fixed without having to resort to such drastic measures

  7. I used load resistors from ebay and a couple of diodes to stop back feeding when I fitted LED indicators.
