Hi, just joined the forum as I am contemplating a 748 or possibly 916 as my next bike. Have emailed one of the guys on here about one that is advertised (SiRich). Really could do with test riding one first to see if I can get on with the riding position so if anyone in the Cheshire area is looking to let a complete stranger out on their 748 let me know . Had lots of bikes before and was actually on the back page of Practical Sportsbikes with their first bikes of your life feature. I presume there is a buyers guide on the forum somewhere for 748's? I'll have a look later today. Cheers, Mike
Hi mike i'm new here also but have been on Ducatis for quite a few years, if your budget allows, stretch to to latest 748 as you can or even a 998, the later versions are more refined and will offer a better first Ducati experience.. Steev.
Cheers Steev, what are the main differences and how do I tell a later 748 (what year were the updates introduced?). I think a 998 is out of my price range.
If you read this wiki link you'll see all the update, i'll say this, I bought a new 998 with the testastretta engine, a friend had a 916 and 996 sp, although the bike looked similar almost every component is different, just design progress. There is nothing wrong with old stuff its just not as refined, very heavy clutch etc. have you considered a 749 0r 999, its worth a look there are some bargains out there. The 748 motor didn't change significantly in its lifespan. Later motors (post 2001 I think) have a three phase generator, that being the major change. A fairly decent 748bip can be had for 2-3k, R spec models raising to 5k. Go and have a chat with Tony at motocorse in Wrexham. Ps, Im in Chester.
Ta for that Cranker V2 that is the kind of money I was looking to spend which will leave me some to sort out any consumables or issues. Will try the place in Wrexham . Do they just do servicing or does he sell the occasional bike as well? Good to know there are some local Ducati guys on the forum. I am near Oulton Park.
I'll second this, great guy and he has some awesome bikes there at the moment! He will tell you what to look out for, I need to get my 748 up to him ASAP actually!
