Oil Change Advice Needed

  1. I am all set to change the oil on my Monster 750 ie for the first time since I bought it and have hit a couple of snags. Before tackling the job I thought that I should try loosening the sump plug and oil filter and, surprise surprise, neither would move. I used a metal-strap type filter removal tool and a very large Allan key for the sump plug but, despite lots of force and a certain amount of hammering, neither would move. At this point I stopped in case I broke something. Any tips/suggestions or should I take it to a professional?

  2. The sump plug is a normal thread so unscrews anti-clockwise. However, as it's upside down and as we usually are above it it's not unusual for people to turn it the wrong way ie clockwise although they think they're turning it anti-clockwise. I'm not saying you did that as I've no idea but there's other have done so before.

It's not unusual for filters to have been overly tightened by previous owners or even mechanics/service technicians. The best tool to remove it is a dedicated oil filter wrench. They're not expensive, something like this will do the job. It too unscrews anti-clockwise.
