I've done quite a bit of research here and elsewhere but haven't found anything very conclusive so here goes. Thinking of putting a quickshifter on my race only 996SPS which has a PC111USB. The choices seem to be Translogic, HM or Power Commander. The first 2 cut the ignition, the PC the fuel. So my questions are; 1. Which is better, ignition or fuel and why? 2. If ignition which is better, Trans or HM and why? (Both similar price but twice the price of PC) 3. If setup correctly is there more wear and tear on the gearbox? 4. Any other thoughts or suggestions? Thanks Bront
I personally use the PC quickshift and I prefer to cut the fuel as I am not keen on the 'pop' from the exhaust that some bikes get when changing gear when the spark is cut, having said that is probably just people having the cut time set to long. To be honest I have used the PC and translogic and they both work well, if you have a PC already I would go for the PC quick shift and save some cash. I did get mine dyno'd to get the best out of the quick shift
HM on my shed and it's been fine. though I do KNOW that there have been gearbox reliabilty and QS unit reliability issues with HM units on high bhp bikes (180+bhp)
HM on mine, once set up which does not really take long they are seamless. Mine does not pop when changing gear, wish it did
+1 I have had HM QSs on a number of different bikes and always had them set up properly by someone more experienced with them (ie, not me!). As with many adjustable components, unless set up properly they can cause more problems than solve. Get it set up right, however, and they will do what it says on the tin.
Key points with shifters are: How do they sense the shift, how do they kill the motor and kill times.. HM uses a strain gauge and can be setup to kill precisely when load is on the gear box to move to the next gear not just when the lever it touched, some use a simple ball and spring very much a crude switch and can often fail over time, ware out all together or incorrectly sence when the lever is moved killing the motor before the selector is in the right position. The HM Plus kills the coils so ignition is cut giving a clean stall of the motor fully unloading the gearbox to give a clean shift, FI kill times are less accurate as fuel can still be in the inlets so the kill/stall is not clean thus not fully unloading the gear box also fuel is hard to stop for a perfect duration of time unlike the ignition. Some do not have selectable kill times so a good delay can not be set, too long of a kill time will cause lurching the delay can heavily reload the gear box causing stree to gears etc, too short of a kill time will make it hard to select the next gear as the gearbox is still loaded. Never heard of any problems with high powered bikes and HM nine times out of ten gear box failure will be through being to harsh with it, incorrect setup, or issues with reliablibility regardless of Quickshifters.
On another note with regards to HM, I had a senor issue. I sent it back to Ben at HM and within a week it came back with a new sensor which effectively is a now new QS as there are no moving parts. I have heard about QS's lunching 1098R gearboxes but we don't have to worry about that
Yeah Ben and Co at HM always try and help people out no matter what, they are used to the lastmindotcom needs of pro racers and road riders alike. All moto2 and moto3 teams run HM Quickshifters as do many other high level teams, best thing is like you say HM treat everyone the same.. I fitted HM to most bikes from S1000RRs to 848's all work very well, the racers I have sold to LOVE the HM Quickshifters you have to spend hardcore cash to get better and with that come highly complex setup software... HM PC for powercommanders also works very well with the same sensor and CPU it gives a cheaper option for those running PCs.. BMW S1000 RR HM Plus connects to the 8 injectors unlike many others in the range that use the coil packs.. I think Quickshifters are great fun on the road and essential on track, well I say essential loosely depending on your needs for racing its an advantage and someone without one will loose out to those with one regardless of clutch less up shift techniques. Keep an eye out on eBay they come up fairly often at a great price and don't forget HM Plus looms are avalible for most models so Honda / Suzuki units can be used on Ducati with a new loom at 50 as can Kawasaki / Yamaha..
Call me old fashioned but I've never fitted a quick shifter - I have plenty of other areas where I loose time whilst racing that need improving first!! My opinion is (for what it's worth :wink is - No one at club level, or even national level, has won a race purely because of a quickshift system - I know quite a few people who have lost races due to the quickshifter failing though!!
For it to fail it would have to totally die, IMO that is VERY rare, even at club level if one ride has and one rider does not he without would be at a disadvantage end of.. even on the road Ive tested it and sold on the back of that shifting with a Quickshifter is MUCH quicker, it's worth a bike lengnth a shift when flat out and that could win you races lol over a lap add it up.... End of the day for me it fun we could argue the what's and whys and end up with why even bother with anything that goes over 70 on the road and so on..... as for racing I 100% agree a rider should be at top level to require a slight advantage in order to win races but then the competition gets the same advantage and all is even again in regards to tech, at club level a rider could require a small advantage to make up for he lack of skill elsewhere....and so on.... Im old school too and love simple old school bikes as well as high tech rice burners for whatever your reasons to run one or not it puts a smile on your face 99% of the time
Dunno, but it's definitely race pattern (upside down to us mere road mortals) The HM+ can be set up in either configuration....should you require it. And I will vouch for Athurbikemad's advice, sales and service.
yep its race pattern.i love it.dunno what id do without a quickshifter now.lol mine does pop on every change as mentioned above.its running with nemesis ecu all set by jhp
yep mine in picture but was bought as a set from someone (full acro system/quickshifter/nemesis)it was all set up by jhp.i looked on theyre web but they only list hm now.same as this bike has what ever it is.
