Coil Testing Help

  1. Advice on testing the cigar coil (rear) on the 999. Bike rans on front cylinder only. Checked plugs and swapped. Ducati says resistance should be 650m ohms+_50 . I get on my multi meter , set at the lowest 200, 1.2 on a good one and the faulty one .6 . Nothing like in the Manual :(
Can someone explain ? I have done the google searching and none the wiser :?

  2. 0.6 ohms is 600 milliohms, so in spec. Small m = milli, big M = Mega. What does your meter show when the probes are connected together? You need to subtract that from the reading for very low resistances to get anywhere near accurate readings. If it reads any more than zero then your 0.6 ohm resistance is outside the spec. Old fashioned AVOs had a knob to trim it out, but modern digital meters don't so you have to do it in your head.

I'd swap the coils and see if the fault moves, but I don't know if that's possible on your bike.

  3. Thanks for the expiation! Meter probes together read .5. The new second hand coil reads 1.2 (it is off a working engine )

  4. No problem. So 1.2 - 0.5 = 0.7 (700) which is 650 +/- 50. Spot on. The other one, however, measures 0.1 ohms (0.6 - 0.5), so is pretty definitely broken. Good, because that's what you thought. I hope it hasn't broken anything else.

  5. Thanks again.. It did blow a 5 amp fuse only, and that was on the fuel pump circuit - I came to a holt in the middle of nowhere.. Am trying to buy another and the one that came today is off a 749 , had no fly lead so going back.. They are on ebay so will be sorted..
