I'd love to hear your experience with them. They have been suggested to me as a great rain tyre. Have a nice trip and let us know how they fare. What other tyres have you used in the past?
I’ve used all sorts….. Pr3 - excellent Pr4 - junk Pr5 - excellent Roadtec 01 great to start but went off really fast S22 awesome but no life Sport attack 4 best ever grip but not used in rain so limited knowledge Let’s see what a mutant can do. Talked to the tec at Goodyear and he said run pressure 36 36 so that’s what I’m doing.
I guess it depends on how, when and where you ride. Sport attack awesome grip and feel if you’re really quick, but be honest with yourself and remember much shorter life, PR5 totally different type of tyre, hasn’t got the feel but still very very good and gives great confidence in the wet.
I would say Conti Road Attack 3 will be closer to PR3, 4, 5 Sport Attack is a way softer tyre. Road Attack 3 fantastic in rain or dry and I think I am probably on my 8th pair. Run them for last few years, on 1290gt and GS1200. Back when PR2 was current, that was my go to tyre, went through many pairs on a variety of bikes. PR3, 4 they went a bit weird IMO, strange front tyre wear and several low miles rear punctures. They seemed to pick up small sharp stones in the narrow tread. Just how it happened for me. Grip was superb though. Not tried 5s yet and probably will not unless I have a problem getting hold of the Contis.
So how did the mutant do? Not bad at all. Keep in mind that this is not a super soft knee down sports tyre that you need to replace every 800miles. After 7 days playing in Scotland and the lakes in some of the worst weather. Tyres showed little sign of wear, in fact it took the first thousand for the pips to come off. No moments of slippage, all round decent tyre. Started off with standard 36f 36r. Felt like puncture in the rear. upped to 42r perfect. Certainly less slip on gravel and forest tracks than a standard tyre. Had to jump on motorways for 100 mile blast in torrential downpour ( motorways / against my religion ) kept to 2 figure speeds (just) totally stable. So I’m happy with them, they’ll stop on until the sun comes out.
Just read this and a good review and helpful information. Sounds like a great winter / autumn tyre choice for the back B roads round my area Marches and Wales . How did the front feel under braking as some wet style tyres can feel a bit squirmy when pushed . Thanks again for the write up
Update, 7 day trip around Ireland back roads and the Mutants are dead, front is now starting to misshape (heavy braking with loaded panniers) and the back is squared off. To be very fair although they’re now dead they never gave me a moment of worry. Wet, dry, fast, loaded and mainly back roads. Roughly 3000 miles, which for me is amazing. ContiRoad Attack 4’s booked for fitting on Friday.
With deep grooves like that I’d have expected 4-5k range. Truly awful looking but glad they worked for you.
They’ll probably last many riders 5k plus. Great in the wet, and rough back roads are no challenge at all, gravel fine etc.
