Plastic Repair

Discussion in 'Technical Help' started by Speedy23, Jun 16, 2022.

  1. ...looking for someone who can repair a front mudguard from 2002 900SS and replace a bottom fairing tab (the 3rd one back).

    Any suggestions near Gloucs/Worcs area?

And anybody got any idea roughly how much?

(And before anybody asks, yes my own stupid fault attempting to move the bike off its chock with disc lock attached....doh!)

  2. I'd give that a good clean, and duct tape it together on the outside. Then use Davids Isopon P40 Epoxy paste to permanently repair it on the inside. Then its just some minor fettling, and a rattle can to finish.

  5. ..make do and mend..

  6. Q-Bond could work well also.

  8. is this one of the brand names for the two-pack kit consisting of a white (possibly) powder you apply and then a fluid you trickle on afterwards with pretty rapid setting time?

  9. Yep...very fine powder plus Cyanoacrylate Adhesive. I've had good success, even rebuilding missing (small) pieces. :upyeah:

  10. same here, used it to the max at one point, but then struggled to get hold of, at a reasonable price, only seemed to be available abroad etc.

  11. Thanks, that’s quite a comprehensive kit and a lot different to when I was using it, so I guess it’s made a resurgence since then. I’m not surprised and was scratching my head as to why it was almost impossible to get hold of at one point, regardless of cost, hence gave up.

  12. result for everyone! :bucktooth:

  13. If it’s the right plastic, then yes, surely a result? From research I found the stuff I used was called plastech but have a feeling that a trade name dispute followed, also aware that speedy is already aware of plastex in a previous thread, but maybe he’s forgotten. This happens to me more more now if it is the case.

  14. Hi all and thanks for suggestions....yes, Chris, you are correct, I've got a plastex kit and in fact I previously used it to repair the missing tab on the fairing bottom. That repair failed after about 150 miles, owing, I suspect, to the loading on the tab and the nature of the bond between the repair medium and original structure and the vibration produced by the engine.

Did you know you can achieve a similar result using sodium bicarbonate powder and cyanoacrylate glue for smaller repairs?

In truth, I was looking for someone who could mend the damage then re-finish (paint) to an acceptable standard, as I haven't got any spray gear at the moment. My opinion and assessment of my own capabilities in this area is realistic (if a tad depressing) hence my quest for a plastic repair/refinishing specialist.

But all your suggestions and offers are much appreciated, anyway.

    Thanks to all who responded.

  15. I had a few subsequent fractures after using also and came to the conclusion that it's not the solution for every break. If it is the right plastic, then welding is possibly best but you knew that already and sorry not to be able to help with any useful advice, I hope you find someone locally but as suggested, a s/h unit might work out to be roughly the same cost. :upyeah:
