Being a bit of a luddite I don’t understand anything I can’t see or smell, so electricity is a bit like witchcraft to me. Could someone therefore please explain to me the benefits I would experience if I upgrade the stock ignition system on the 900ss I’m doing up? The engine is stock 1995 900ss with FCR39s. I was advised to purchase a Ignitech system & this has arrived but I haven’t fitted it yet. I read somewhere that new coils will be needed & that Nology PFC-30s are the best, but I haven’t ordered any yet. What’s the collective wisdom from people who have upgraded their systems? Thanks
I used the Ignitech on my M900 with stock coils at first which made a big difference to how it ran, then swapped to Exact UK Coils soon after. http://www.exactuk.com/ccw-high-output-coil-kits/ There was another improvement with the new coils, but it could have been because the old ones were buggered. I think you'll get the best out of the Ignitech with better coils, but you don't Have to change them.
On my M900 it just felt stronger, smoother, and picked up quicker. I don't know if I had an issue with a coil or IC ignitor before hand, so can't say 100% it was better than a brand new set of standard parts.
The electronics were basic at best. An Ignitech allows you a great deal of adjustment and has extra features, such as rev limiter and shift light. I have mine set up with a 3d map and a TPS on my fcrs. I also have Nology coils, they are awesome. I had ca cycleworks but Liam from Fastbikegear recommended the Nology so I got them instead. Strong spark and adjustability are two of the benefits
Apologies for resurecting and old thread but which Ignitech module did you guys @Nasher @Desmoquattro use please? I have a carby M900 with a dodgy coil and am considering upgrading all of the 25 year old ignition system.
A very wise idea, it's worth doing the pickups and all wiring too. They have a new version of the Ignitech, you're looking at the SPARKER TCIP4 From memory, get in touch with Ignitech, they are very helpful. Liam Venter at Fastbike gear can sell you everything too, but he's in NZ
Thanks. I’m not sure though if that isn’t overkill. “SPARKER TCIP4 ignition is equipped with two inputs for pickup, input for throttle position sensor or inlet air pressure sensor, two multifunctional switch inputs (for blocking, kill switch, retard...), output for tachometer, two multifunction switch outputs (for fuel pump relay, gear shift light ...), outputs for servomotor.” I’ve 1 pick-up (4wires coming out of it, 2 to each of the 2 ignition boxes at present), no TPS, no air pressure sensor, yes, I have a kill switch but no retard function, no tachometer, no fuel pump relay (it’s a vacuum operated mechanical fuel pump to the carbs), no need of a gear shift indicator, and no need of a servo motor output. On top of all that I have to fanny about software to tune it and learn same. Yet everyone recommends ignitech. I really just want a plug & play device to replace the current igniters.
Do you not have 2 pickups? You should have, all the Ducati twins I've worked on have. Anyway, I appreciate what you're saying. There's a lot of extra features on there for sure, many which you may not use. They have got more and more complicated since I bought mine. I'd get in touch and ask them. The big advantage is that you can tune them if you decide to do more mods, which is a rabbit hole in itself. I ended up with a 3D map and TPS on mine. They used to supply it with a base map to replicate the 2 step ignition map of the original Kukosans. If you asked they could confirm this is still the case. It would then make it plug and play, as you wish. It really is a great but of kit, and much better than replacing with non adjustable boxes. That's my opinion of course.
It’s a 1999 M900 and certainly only has the one pick up, albeit with 4 cloth insulated wires coming out of it, 2 go to one igniter and 2 to another. I’ve assumed it’s running a wasted spark system. Im off to do more research as the parts diagram throws up a blank for that part.
I've not come across this before, if its a carb model I would've thought it would have 2 pickups. However my 2002 900ie SS was a crank sensor due to injection system. Please keep us posted as to your progress. I don't think you can go wrong with an Ignitech
I've got an Ignitech in my M900 build which is a carbed chassis with a 900ie motor I picked up separately years back. Ignitech will build the ignition to suit your bike so best to buy from them direct. Fastbike NZ also sell a very detailed manual that you can use to do any number of tasks connected with set up and running with the Ignitech ignition system. My build in WIP at the moment but I have California Cycleworks coils and Mikuni TDMR40mm flat slide carbs combined with an MWR air filter (well more like a filtered lid)
