Not sure about this , though I am looking for another project bike. Thoughts anyone? 1997 DUCATI 748S Ultimate Road Race Track Model Immaculate Restoration | eBay
Rather than spend £6k on that which IMO is borderline eyesore. This is more of project done than buying a shitter and doing it all yourself
1997 puts it as an early series on the electrics front along with different crank etc and also 40mm spacing on the brake calipers. None of those items make it desirable in itself. If it was an "S" then it would have been a biposto model, so personally, I can't see how you can call it a restoration, a rebuild yes, It even has a biposto subframe pictured I think this is overpriced although it is not dissimilar to my own project of putting a 748R engine in a 748S last year and I wouldn't really expect the sort of money for that than what this guy is asking and that is immaculate as well and more trick!! in theory at least. I assume he wants to get some or all of his money back, I can't see it happening. I also see two offers on it already, probably for much lower sums that don't seem to have been accepted. In short nothing special at all apart from being rebuilt. I notice it has 996 discs and not the originals. It's nice doing these projects but I can't see how he will ever get his money back, it's just not that special in any way save maybe the paint job, and if he paid someone to do a lot of the work then he will well out of pocket I would have thought. Just my opinion based on rebuilding several 748's from scratch over the last few years, it has to be done having in mind it to be a keeper, maybe others will disagree.
Like what Red998 says there is nothing trick about it. The carbon look indicators are as big a fax pas as the paint which is as gordy as any Rossi rep Ducati, which is as nasty as urban camouflage and any Iridium product.
I messaged this chap as I was curious as to why it was so expensive for a Biposto, its been listed for a while, original price was about 8k too. He is charging for the time he has spent on it, some folk just don't realise that does not add value, however if it was original it would be a damn site more desirable....IMHO
Well I made an offer based on its spurious history and being a tarts handbag of a bike - this is the reply "

Why on earth would you think that £2200 is a sensible offer on a bike advertised for £6000. Please dont make an another offer unless you havwe your brain engaged first.

Some folk are not on the same page as far as values are concerned, he probably paid 1-1.5k with a blown engine and is convinced its a pot of gold. Now I love my old 748 dearly, but no matter how much I polish it up, or use the finest parts available, it will never be worth as much as a 916! Incidentally, I offered £250, a half eaten pack of Toffos and a lightly soiled copy of Razzle - He's not replied so he must be considering my offer......
Not nice at all...... Could have spent the same money returning to original spec and making it worth something. It may be clean, but I'd take a genuine, tidy original bike over that any day. He's done the cam tensioners a up wrong to what else is screwed together badly?
Gotta disagree - far from being a big no no , I think the 748/916 suits it and it's a yeah yeah from me. Mind you, I'm prejudiced as mine has it......
Tidy bike but not really a restoration in the true sense and wildy priced , I'm afraid when I do my restoartions its for the fun of it and because I can ! Labour hours cannot be taken in to account, My 900 sl restoration took many hours and I would be lucky to recoup the cost of the bike and parts let alone any labour , which is just as well as I'm not selling
