Will be getting the ferry to Bilbao next month and traveling through the Pyrenees and on to Chamonix where we will can stay with a relative. on from there we don’t really have a plan other than to head back to Calais. The N160 looks to be the route to do through the Pyrenees, can anyone recommend any camping sites? I’m hoping we can just turn up to a camp site without any pre booking as don’t want to be tied down. Had anyone had any experience of this? This will be the first European tour for me so any suggestions on essential kit etc would be good!
Next month is no problem booking a place to stay, summer holidays / high season are / is pretty much over and prices are down. I have done around 14 European Alps/Dolomites/Pyrenees trips beginning of sept. staying in Hotels, pensions. ha! Ha! over the Pyrenees! Not wanting to stick to a strict plan hence why I want be able to make accommodation arrangements day to day. Have given ourselves up to two weeks to complete the trip.
Once you're done with the Pyrenees think about heading though the Haut-Languedoc National Park to the Cévennes: Gorge du Tarn, D901 from Mende to Les Vans. Then across to Mt Ventoux, then Castellane on the Route Napoleon (take a day exploring the Gorge du Verdon whilst you're there). After that across to The Route des Grande Alps via the N202, D2202, D28 and D30. North up the Rte d. G. Alp over the numerous cols (Col d'Izoard is probably my favourite) finally cutting across to Chamonix. Sounds like an epic trip
Yep, Bumpkin has some good recommends there. If you have time, use google street view to get a real idea of what the roads are like.
Plus if you're in the Pyrenees and find yourself in this particular area then this road is a complete hoot. Only 15km long but will have you giggling inside your helmet. The road builders knew what they were doing, a lot of the corners are cambered
Great, you can visit it multiple times then Reminds of the road from Florac to Pont-de-Montvert in the Cevennes. I'd organised a trip there for myself and 5 biking friends. We were staying in the latter and the supermarket was in the former. There was never a shortage of volunteers to go shopping... The one I've recommended in my previous post is on another level to that one though.
I could get that one planned on the route. I’m getting excited now! Only just over a month to plan this trip.
It is good, I did it on the monster R last year. The N106 is also superb, possible to do half and half
Done that road before from pont de montvert and it's great. I'm doing that road in September but the other way this time from Millau. Then going up Alpe D'Huez and then to Colmar.
I think you might need vacation certificate to get into Spain on the ferry, we were checked in June. Log book and insurance as well of course. Would also recommend the Tarn gorge, but do it early on the day before the traffic builds up.
