Just completed this rebuild project, couldn't get my hands on a bike at the time so decided to refurb one of these very familiar to me 1000DS motors. This version carries the swingarm bearings in the cases and it's also built with the closer ratio gearbox from the 749 which I prefer and use in my own 1000DS. New big end shells (measured), main bearings (preload shimmed), gearbox bearing, seals, gearbox shimmed up, clutch pressure plate bearing, clutch basket (4k miles on it), valve guides checked, valves lapped in, clearances set, new belts with new version tensioners, cams dialed in to spec etc. I can help out with an ecu map to suit a build if required. Link to full photo album of build including video of it running on a bench test setup: https://www.flickr.com/gp/189150092@N03/5qv58J The motor was initially run up on a new oil/filter combo then drained and replaced with Shell Advance and a Ducati filter. Also the pick-up filter was inspected after the bench tests. £2200 Steve (York,UK).
Buy it R, you know it makes sense, and you know you want to. I drove down to "Feked" central probably over 5 years ago to pick some 851 fairings up, I hope they are still going. EDIT - they are!:- https://www.feked.com/
The engine is certainly a thing of beauty, and I'd love to drop it into either my M1000 or 1000SS, but it would put the rest of either bike to shame.
Hi Bradders, it'll suit those that need the swingarm bearings in the crankcase - 1000SS, M1000, SC1000, S2R, 900SS with mod for 12mm eng bolts, the ST series (e.g. https://www.motomatter.com/cafe-racers/ducati-st2-cafe-racer-shed-x-customs-superleggra/) . A cafe racer build based on any of those, if someone where to say use the S2R swingarm you'd need this type, it'll probably suit others too. The Multi uses swingarm bearings in the swingarm and not the motor, a fair few of those motors around but not so many of this type with bearings in cases.
I know it may look a bit pricey to some, but given the work and rebuild and the great way these motors work and last I am surprised you still have it! Have you got it listed anywhere else? May be a bit specialist for here, there are some Facebook forums where you may reach abroad where they love these and make some crazy race bikes from them (Dutch especially!!) GLWS
