Effect On Value Of "stolen/recovered" Older But Mint Bike?

Discussion in 'Ducati General Discussion' started by mattb, Sep 25, 2022.

  1. Hi All

I did a deal on a v nice 93 Fireblade the other day as a private sale. However when I went to do an HPI check I discovered that it has been stolen/recovered at some point in its life. Bizarrely I've done more than one further HPI check since then and not all HPI checks even show it as ever having been stolen. Vcheck did show it, the AA doesn't. The police have confirmed its not currently stolen.

Its an immaculate bike with a brilliant service history and the current price reflects that. I suspect it was stolen/recovered many years ago. Can anyone advise the likely effect on value, if at all? Ive heard of everything from no effect on value to a 10-40% reduction. What do people think/know?

    Ta very much

  2. Imho treat as a cat c/d: maybe 20% difference based on condition etc. ie if it’s mint and a mint bike is 10k I’d be looking at 8k, which actually may be more than a ‘good’ example of same bike sometimes.

  3. Agree with above I’d say it’s 30% off what a clean bike would be to make it saleable if it’s only 10 to 15% off what a clean title bike would be people would rather pay the difference for one with a clean hpi,

  4. 30% decay in value is the benchmark I believe. Always a bone of contention with insurance. Your vehicle is worth 30% less if it’s been nicked- even if it’s still mint.

If you have a bike nicked, you’re better off if it stays nicked for pay out purposes. Get it back and you’re stuck with a lemon. For resale purposes anyway.

  5. 1992 FireBlade owner here, so I understand the appeal! There are enough decent bikes out there, at the moment at least, for the value of this to be less than the same bike with a clear history.
Having said that, a '93 'Blade is now 29 years old so has quite a bit of history behind it, which will only get longer...I don't think a long-passed blot on it's copy book will have too great an effect on it's value long-term UNLESS you're looking at it purely as a collector's item and potential investment.
If you're looking to ride and enjoy it, I wouldn't worry if it's the bike (in the right condition) you really want.
    What colour is it?
    Mine says 'hi'

  6. Funny how stolen/ recovered instantly puts an image in your mind of it being ragged around/ chased by the police/ dropped etc, but someone may have just nicked it, rode it for ten minutes then parked it up somewhere. If it’s mint and you like it, go for it. Any additional money off is a bonus.

  7. I bought my Mt09 at auction as a stolen recovered cat N and it was immaculate except for 1 wire being cut so it doesn’t necessarily mean all stolen recovered have been heavily damaged. The value will be around 30% less though which doesn’t bother me as I’ll never sell it.

  8. Thanks for the replies chaps. Its a lovely bike (a fox eye in black with the red "CBR") in absolutely mint condition. However its not your round eye red/white/blue model LDP which is what I really want!

@mattb I've owned it since 2004. Paid £1750 for it :grinning:

  10. If it was stolen and not broken for parts then I'd assume it was bounced off the rev limit at every available opportunity by the twoc'ers and their mates.

  11. Thing is, with bikes of that age, does it matter?! Long as v5 in owners name and docs all align to bike, who cares. I wouldn’t even bother with hpi on anything like that tbh: not like it’s being bought for investment (probably)

  12. I would HPI an old bike.

I would use the stolen/ recovered/ Cat C etc designation to get a better price. I would then ideally sell it to you...

Paying over the market price, on a bike that will likely not increase in value means you lose out when its time to move it on.

  13. It will come back and bite you if/when you come to sell it, I would be looking for a reduction in price as thats what the next buyer will likely want from you. If its not the colour you really want then keep looking...

  14. 40 year old bikes fellas. Couple of grand maybe. I wonder sometimes how people get thru life.

  15. Love the "CBR" typeface, 90's era for sure, even BMW used it on their helmets...(owned one) probably scared to use it on the bikes... ;-0

  16. My KTM 990 Dakar was stolen three times in two years in London. Although I always recovered it from the police pound, I never claimed on my insurance, just had the ignition barrel replaced each time. It never had any record of theft.

  17. Had it with a car once, clean on the HPI but when i insured it the insurance company (Adrian Flux) came back to me saying it had a theft claim on it. Turned out it had been stolen and recovered with in a few hours, claim was for some minor damage from the theft but it was never registered as stolen.

  18. Completely agree. These bikes are now £5k+ for a nice one so a 30% drop in value on resale would be significant

  19. HPI check is £10 or so depending on which one. Losing £30% of £5000 is £1500. Hard to see why anyone wouldn't spend the price of a couple of cups of coffee to save themselves the cost of a years supply! @bradders
