Came to have a look at a 998R at H&H auctions, national motorcycle museum. I think there’s been a thread involving it somewhere. Anyway, if it’s done the stated 146km since new then I’m a Dutchman. Looked ok in the photos so I suspect it’ll sell to a dreamy-eyed internet bidder. The good bits: it’s a 998R. The bad bits: broken screen, poorly repaired nose cone rhs, broken rev counter glass, leaking rh fork, gouge on lh fork, non standard exhaust, scuffed lh mirror, gaffa tape covering something on front wheel, rear shock leaking, rear shock bump rotted, air filters rotten and collapsed into tubes, no mesh on air intakes, seems to have been ridden in salt at some point. I could go on but lost interest and went to look at other stuff. Goes to show you shouldn’t bid without looking, I was going to. Oh, no plaque, stand or cover either, not a 998R you’d want to lick.
Just read the auction description and looked at the pictures. Any remote buyer will have a solid mis selling of goods claim from H&H. Very poor indeed. Andy
Previous description a few days ago mentioned damage caused by bike falling over. It’s just nowhere near tidy enough for a sub 200km bike.
Sold in the room for 22.5k inc fees so whoever bought it looked at it first. Should have gone to specsavers.
I was there. The MV Agusta was probably the scruffiest one of those I've seen. Chrome flaking off the silencers, rust showing through the paint on the tank. General oxidisation that didn't look like the bike had been stored in a museum and covered only 2000 odd miles. (Unless the midland motorcycle museum is a leaky shed). Loads of phone bidders from around the world apparently. bids started at around £60k and went to £86k! (plus fees so around the £100k mark)
Bonkers considering it needs a full stripdown, more money than sense some people, but i guess that what happens at auctions.
Another More fool the man and he’s money. That’s a £50k rebuild. Another case of misrepresentation by H&H. In a museum my arse. It’s been in a damp garage. Tomorrow if I get time I will call the Midland Motorcycle Museum and check if the statement correlates. I know these bikes, have a soft spot for them. A fully restored mint bike can be bought from £100k. I can see why they fetch a premium like the green frame, rarity and bloody gorgeous in the flesh. Engine rebuild alone is an eye watering five figures. The dog rough one. https://www.handh.co.uk/auction/lot/352-1973-mv-agusta-750-s/?lot=56590 This one sold for €95,000 https://www.carandclassic.com/auctions/1974-mv-agusta-750s-8xGR14
Out of curiosity, I have tried to google search the "Midlands motorcycle museum" Nothing found. which is strange as even when places close down there is some legacy left on the internet for decades in my experience. I live in the Midlands, like motorcycles and places to visit on a bike, and have never heard of it. The auctioneer when starting the lot originally said National motorcyle museum (where the auction was held), and then quickly made a point of correcting himself. Has anyone else ever heard of the Midlands Motorcycle Museum, or visited it? Just curious.
I'd only ever heard of it called the National Motorcycle Museum, based presumably on their collection consisting of nationally produced motorbikes. I had visited a few times before their major fire, not since. I've never heard of it called the Midlands Motorcycle Museum
Smoke and daggers by H&H. Charlatans. Good commission on final hammer price. 10% plus vat. That’s nearly £15k on one bike alone.
Wow, 22k for that.... I even spoke to the H&H "specialist" about it today and none of your observations were mentioned. Caveat emptor.
15% fee plus 20% vat on the fee. I’m still fizzing at how much of a hound that 998 was. I’ve restored my own 998 so I’ve got a fair idea of what I’m looking at. Will be interesting to see where it pops up for sale next. 150-odd mile bikes shouldn’t be leaking oil or have dirty chain & sprockets. The bike was last listed in a bonhams auction in monaco, the pictures are available online, the mileage is supposedly the same now but loads of bits different: exhaust, chain, rear sprocket, clutch cover, rearsets, spiders living inside the fairings etc. Apparently it’s been started recently, if it has the motor will have sucked in all the crap from the collapsed air filters. Very sad to see such a beauty left to rot.
Maybe I’m an idiot but perhaps the mileage was higher and it had a new speedo fitted? Sounds like it might not have been as described whatever the real reason (which may remain a mystery).
I think they ballsed-up and meant the National Motorcycle Museum. Shows the incompetence and lack of attention to detail. Who’d wanna buy an auction lot from them?
