Multistrada 1200 Enduro Shad Top Box

  1. Hi All,
Hopefully I will be having my 2018 1200 Multistrada Enduro delivered tomorrow, and have a question regards luggage. The bike comes with the factory aluminium panniers, but not the top box, the factory Touratech topbox and all the fittings is very pricey, so have been looking at alternatives. I'd feel more comfortable with a set that has rails that bolt to the subframe as part of the kit (rather than the SW Motech kit that just bolts to the grab handles). Has anyone had any experience with the SHAD fitting kit and the SHAD Terra aluminium top boxes, is this set up sturdy without putting too much stress on the grab handles (my other half does tend to lean on the top box), alternatively has anyone used the Ducati fitting kit and managed to adapt it to fit a Givi Monokey topbox, I know Givi don't do a fitting kit specifically for this bike, but i do have a Givi top box kicking around in the garage!
Any pearls of wisdom on this topic would be gratefully received, and avoid intercom comments like 'DAVE, I'm going to fall off the back!!!'
    Cheers

  2. Or maybe look at Hepco and Baker? I have a Journey top box and the rear rack on my 1260, which also has a grab rail. I think they do aluminium boxes as well

  3. I've had a 1200 enduro since new in 2017. Like yours it came with the OE zega pro panniers but not the top case.
I already had Givi top boxes so I decided to get the OE fitting kit for the plastic top case as it was a givi case. Expensive but I thought since it was OE it would be a simple fit. You can guess where this is going.
In short there are two separate and non mixable OE fitting kits. One for the zega pro cases and one for the plastic cases.
The problem part, in our scenario is the crossover bar between the mounting rails for the zega cases. The route of this bar blocks the support rails for the OE givi mounting kit.
I dont know if there will be the same problem with the shade mounting kit but I cannot see a manufacturer being aware of this conflict as it's obvious that the designers at Ducati, Touratech and Givi all missed it.
My option was either buy the touratech kit from Ducati, limiting my top case options, forget about using a top box or go down the Heath Robinson route.
I went for the latter with a couple of lengths of flat bar which I bent, twisted drilled and spaced to pick up the mounting points on the side case brackets and 4 under the top case mounting bracket. So far it's worked flawlessly for nearly 6 years.
Pics should show where the OE brackets come into conflict and if you zoom in on the second you should be able to pick up the router of the bar I fitted.

  4. I have ended up going down the road of getting the factory Touratech fitting kit for the top box, and will adapt a Givi plate to fit (or make a plate and just add the Givi fittings for Monokey top boxes), that way i can fit my current Givi V47 top box, and in the future i have the option of just purchasing either a more adventure styled Givi top box, or removing my plate and adding the Ducati/Touratech top box. Hopefully i have attached the parts list for the top box fittings (managed to find this after some digging) so people in future will have easy access to the Ducati Touratech top box parts list (pages 4-6 for list in English).

  5. I ended up just making an aluminium plate that fits between the Touratech top box mount and the Givi Monokey base, seems to work well, solid as a rock, and i i decide in the future to get a factory top box, i can just remove the plate. 132 litres of luggage capacity will be plenty for our Scotland trip later in the year!
