916 Picked This Up Yesterday, But What Is It!

Discussion in '748 / 916 / 996 / 998' started by Nick Collins, Apr 24, 2023.

  1. Picked up this yesterday at Bonham's

It has chassis number 000025 and as far as I'm aware originated from Holland and was imported here in 96.
The stamps on the plastics indicate it was built April 94 and it has the chassis number stamped on various parts around the bike.
Not been run for a good few years so will require a fair bit of fettling to return it to the road.
    Any Idea's?

  4. Interesting. Any more pics. Has it got the date stamp on the opposite side of the headstock from the frame number.

  5. It has 4 25 stamped on the other side of the headstock (not sure what that means)

  6. Yup, @Nick Collins I confirm this is a French import by SIMA, the pre « Ducati Store era » official Ducati/Cagiva importer in France.

The chassis number stamped everywhere on the bike is typical from the early 2000 period, when French insurance companies requested this as an « anti-theft » procedure for all motor vehicles (SRA). Stamps and a stamping certificate attesting the vehicle was in a database (Argos) with owner name (you may have this certificate with the bike’s papers?). This is no longer a requirement. The cool thing about it is that it helps identifying original parts on your bike. You will also find them on each fairing panel (look closely as they are not easy to spot), rims, etc. 11 stamps were required.

  7. 24th week of 1994 as the frame build date?

  8. Any idea when production started?

  9. Late 93 for MY 1994? Falloon book should have this info. I am not home for a few weeks, so can’t check for you. But it’s probably of the first imported in France.

  10. Proper confused now! so do the chassis numbers not just run in sequence (as in first of the production line is 00001 and so on)?
I am more used to old Japanese bikes where it doesn't matter what the bikes destination is, they just run in sequence.

  11. It's exciting stuff when you find something different from the norm, good luck with the bucket & sponge treatment etc.:upyeah:

  12. them Italians..
even now there are probably some Lancia bodyshells with race program, pre-allocated chassis numbers sitting around somewhere that will turn up long after after i've gone.

  17. Curious what you paid Nick, if you would share ? I'm seriously tempted now and have started saving my pennies

  18. Bonhams lists previous sales... it's on their website.

  19. Thats a fair price, some minor works needed to tidy it up and a nice bike at the end. Great project.

  20. Looks better in the photos, has not been stored very well at some point in its life , I’ll post some more photos.
Strangely I bought this because I thought it was a really early bike but having checked the headstock on the Strada I have owned for 11 years and it’s only 2 weeks later, about 1500 later on the VIN though
