959 Sachs Shock Bearing Play

  1. Grumpy. Just put 959 back together after doing my first desmo and thought I'd get the hideous fauxlins yellow spring powder coated red and i'd spray the nasty gold gas canister black, done, looks gorgeous, thanks for asking. However, while putting it back I've noticed a shed load of play in the rear shock mount bearing (rose joint/uniball)...the one where shock attaches to rocker arms. Looking at manual and everywhere else I can find there is no part available to replace this rod end bearing. How ridiculous is this ffs? Firstly that it's toast at 16k and secondly that a simple bearing rights off a perfectly good shock . Does anyone know if there is a way to source a replacement or have I really got to replace the shock? Not happy bunny. ...And no I can't afford a k tech or ohlins so second hand fleabay for me. Help. Sachs shock btw. Help.

  2. Not sure if you can get the bearing pressed out, probably can but if not, you can my Sachs shock for £40 + delivery.
    Only done 3.5K miles.

  3. May I add 'you fat bastard' for shits-n-giggles.

  4. Just change the bearing. There should be a top hat either side, pull those out. There may or may not be some runner O or quad rings as well. Hook them out. Then there's a snap ring on one or both sides. Hook one out. Press out the bearing. Get a new bearing and assemble in reverse.

  5. 16k is a fair bit on a shock to be fair. And those Sachs units are pony. But cheap second hand atleast !

Speak to mct or someone they’ll be able to put you in the right direction I’d imagine.

Would spraying the canister do it much good ? Those stock shocks overheat anyway so you’re effectively insulating it?

  6. Pretty certain that it comes out in two halves..

  7. Thanks all, found and bought a used 1299 sachs on ebay for £40+ which hopefully should be fine if I swop springs. Sorry, missed your reply otherwise I'd have had yours Bettes, if this one turns out to be cack when it shows I'll give you a shout. Off to watch nw200 today so stuck dodgy one back in but going to portimao for a few track days at end of month so need it right for that.
Re getting bearing sorted, yeah I expect I can drive it out, it's the getting a replacement that I'm concerned about, I suppose I can just measure the old one and have a trawl of t'internet for something generic and and keep ithat shock as a spare.
...and bomz, I'm a petite girlish 13 stone I'll have you know.

  8. ...hmm, never considered spraying might be a bad idea...looks sooo much better though

  9. Hi Bettes, I got that 1299 shock but the springs can't be stopped (very different length and girth of spring b
Hi Bettes, I got the 1299 shock but it's not possible to swop the springs (1299 spring an inch shorter and a fair bit wider) so if yours is from a 959 and especially if you can get it to me by Friday (bike drop off for Portumao on Saturday) then I'd be eternally grateful... I'll see if I can work out how/if I can PM you.
