So. Out for a ride yesterday and when I got home I noticed the well documented water dripping from the left side of the engine. Thinking water pump I had a bit of a sulk… Then a mate made me aware of the Squirter unit issues! If you see the picture, looks like mine might be on the way out. So will order a new one anyway as it is apparently a revised part. weirdly this am I warmed the bike up, let it cycles on the fan a few times and it didn’t leak a drop, so my theory is that it’s under high revs and load that it’s starting to weep out. anyone else had these issues recently? I found some threads on various forums but they are old ones I think I’ve caught it super early tbh but it’s still a pain! If I knew of a really good local Ducati tech to Swindon I’d get them to do the job for me but I don’t, so might have to get my hands dirty
Snell’s found my squirter to be faulty when my 1299s had its annual service last year - can’t recommend them enough.
That’s the badger. I’m going to strip mine out this week and see what state it’s in. But I think it’s on the way out
When you get the unit out, have a look around the area where the grey blob is on the one in the picture, you may see the steel pin of the thermostat just starting to break through the plastic housing (this is what usually happens). The version I have pictured is the upgraded latest one as used on the V2.
All this talk about “Squirter units” made me think this thread was about prostrates or something So it’s the thermostat housing we’re actually on about ? I’ve seen pictures where the pin has broken through them before
I'm hopeful it's 'just' that, as it's a £130 fix I can do myself, where as the water pump not so much. That said I ran it up to temp yesterday a few times and it didn't leak a drop, so i need to test ride it and see if it leaks again with pressure. think it's safe to say for piece of mind, getting the newly designed part in there and fresh coolant before we get into the meat of the summer weather wouldn't be a bad thing
FWIW, I had this on my 899 recently. I was sometimes getting a drop of a small amount of coolant out the left hand side of the engine from the water pump. But it wasn't always happening, just sometimes. I didnt know about squirter unit before, haven't come across that so far, but the leak was always coming from the black hole in this image (1PM position) and running along the top of the casing and then under the bike on to the floor (just a few drips) https://www.899panigale.org/attachments/image-jpg.2466/ Anyways, Ive just finished changing the water pump which came out feeling notchy... So i think it was worth while. I did the clear clutch cover mod at the same time. https://photos.app.goo.gl/qj7vrme3phK4jKbr7 https://photos.app.goo.gl/LhkoSUhf7cQipLAF6 It'll be the first ride tomorrow since putting it all back together, off to the MOT test station... I'm hoping all is good as I dont fancy tearing it down again.
Where did you source the (I assume) 1199/1299 Engine case from in good condition? I'd like to change mine so I can run a 2 piece clutch cover and get a slipper clutch at some point.
@Phill748 i got my 2piece mag 1199 cover off fleabay. They don’t come up that often 2nd hand. Word of warning if you want to pop out the sight glass round window. Be very very careful you don’t snap the actual cover. Have a brand new sight glass if you ever need one
I bought mine of eBay, like @Phill748 said, they dont come up very often. Mine was more chipped than I would like so I sprayed mine Black with VHT paint then a coat of VHT laquer. Id also like to get a slipper clutch fitted, probably from an 1199 if I can find one.
yeah, as I believe the 1299/959 slipper clutch is different, so would have to be a 1199 one. I guess the basket is different. I'm going to pull the bike apart one night this week to get the thermostat out, so will update the thread with my findings.
From what I've read, you need the basket. Im not sure if the 1299/959 would work, I think they would, but its a completly different baskey from the 899.... Its pretty difficult todo as I think you need a special tool to hold the clutch and the bolt/nut is VERY tight. I might give it a go, I like a challenge.
