Chain Chat !

  1. Guys I’ve have and have had a number of bikes in the past and used lots of different chain oils and wax, but I still like to ask people when I’m new to a forum what other people use just incase I’ve missed something I should be using.
Same goes for cleaning products and polish.. any thoughts pls ?

  2. Not the first time this has come up and, if memory serves, there is no real consensus of opinion. There are videos on line where they test 20 or so lubes and they do make some recommendations but there are still pros and cons. on here, everyone seems to have their favourite. I’m currently using bananaslip chain cleaner and lube but only because I got a deal on it.
Personally, and within reason, I don’t think it matters what you use just as long as you use something. The important thing is clean and lube your chain frequently and your chain will be fine.

  3. I use wd40/gt85 to clean then the thickest gear oil I can get to lube it. Takes 5 mins to wipe it clean and lube after every ride

  4. another vote for WD40 to clean the chain and sprockets, and then i use Motul or S1000 chain lube.
i tried the Chain wax from Motul, looked very OEM but most landed on the the road after a ride out..

on my old 999r race bike i had a scotoiler fitted... chain was perfect, and hardly needed adjusting and have considered something for my 1199 track bike as well.. food for thought.

  6. Paraffin to clean chain, as its cheap as chips. Can be filtered and re-used over and over. Then I use any old chain oil. Keeping the chain clean and maintained is 90% of the battle. Plus its a nice easy job that gets you out of the house and into the garage often.

  7. ipone chain cleaner, wurth dry chain lube for me.

As for detailing products, the garage is full of everything that would make for quite a long list. But my go-to's tend to be Bilt Hamber, Carbon Collective, Gyeon and Scholl Concepts

  8. For a proper clean it’s always paraffin, a quick one is WD40. Castrol Racing Lube has been my go to line for the last 15 years. As previously stated the maintenance is the major part. Also you spot things when up and close to the bike too. Last Chain and sprockets lasted around 30000 miles, we’re still ok but I treated myself.

  9. Have WD40 changed their formula because years ago WD40 on O rings would make them expand and ruin them?
I’ve always paraffin to clean then a chain wax to lube.

  12. I’m another WD40 and gear oil man. WD40 sprayed onto a rag to wipe down chain. Gear oil dripped onto chain then the excess wiped off.

  13. Update ! I've just cleaned mine and my wife's chain with a mixture of WD40 & white spirit.. then a good spray and wipe with WD40 chain lube & wax which seems to have done the job . A little bit different to cleaning a motocross chain with petrol then a quick dunk into the engine oil.

  14. Motoverde drivetrain cleaner, lots of water to rinse. Dry the chain and sprockets with a cloth (elps to prove you've got it clean!!) then Wurth dry chain lube. Weekly minimum

  15. Gear oil for lubing, wd40 for a quick wipe, paraffin for cleaning depending on how dirty.

Fortnine does a good Youtube piece on this.

I want my chain wet rather than sticky and dry.
