Front Paddock Stand For An 888

Discussion in '851 / 888' started by KevB, Jan 5, 2023.

  1. Hi

Can any of the 888 owners recommend a front paddock stand for the 888. I have a Constand (recommended for an 888) but it is useless if you want to remove the front wheel as it obstructs the axle. A bit irritating as I have the rear wheel off so am unable to use the Skylift without refitting it and removing the front wheel first.

    Cheers, Kev.

  2. Maybe a headstock paddock stand instead would be better for wheel and other applications.?

  3. A Harris one may be better.
Doesn't obstruct any of my axles (749, 1098, M1100) and was OK also on my 916.

  4. The blurb for that stand says "This paddock stand is for maintenance and tyre warmers only, please do not use it for wheel removal. For wheel removal, we recommend the under yoke paddock stand."

Presumably, in addition to a location feature, the spigots sit on the front wheel axle when in use, so if the axle is removed the bottom of the forks may sit on the spigot flange and the spigots become a detent preventing reinstallation of the axle?

  5. Never had an issue using it to drop the front wheel out of the 748R, the NC29 Gullarm 400RR or the R6. Calipers are removed, pinch bolts and axle nut undone before putting the bike up on the stand so not to put any stress or strain on the stand. Had mine for track use since 2014. Andy

  6. Always had you down as a rebel......!

Presumably there's a reason Harris have this warning on their website, along with a bike specific list so correct spigots are supplied (which doesn't list the 888, or anything from that vintage). The website photos also suggest the axle sits on the spigots, but am sure to OP can check with Harris if that's the route he takes.

  7. I bought this Harris type after rickyx suggested it. It works great I actually just had the wheel off this last week for a puncture.

  8. Under the headstock front stands will not only allow to remove the front wheel but also the fork tubes. ;)

  9. Or, depending on how much work you do on your bike, a hybrid stand that allows lifting by the headstock or the fork bottoms.

In an ideal world, USA made Pit Bull stands would be available in the UK!

The 'headstock' lifting part detaches from the bottom of the stand so doesn't get in the way when lifting on the fork bottoms. Presumably there is a similar thing available in the UK (but unlikely to be as well built as a Pit Bull stand!)

  10. I have a skylift which allows fork removal; the issue was I had the bike on paddock stands and didn't realize the paddock stand I had used on the front prevented front axle removal. I removed the rear wheel and then went to remove the front and subsequently discovered the issue.

To remove the front wheel using the skylift requires that the front is removed first as the rear wheel/axle needs to be in place to take the weight off the front wheel. The bike can then be supported using a front paddock stand and the skylift strap can be removed from the rear wheel/swingarm which then allows the removal of the rear wheel (either while still on the skylift or on a rear paddock stand).

I just don't really want to refit the back wheel just so I can remove the front wheel hence looking at a paddock stand option. And next time I will remove the front wheel first...! :joy:

And thanks all, there have been some really good suggestions and I think I have found a sensibly priced option so will update when it arrives today. Cheers, K.

  12. So, picked up a stand off Ebay at a reasonable price (£47) - no brand, but seems to be upto the job...

  13. That looks super clean, have you completed a refurb.

  14. No yet, been too cold in the garage even with a blower, plus I've had a few other diversions. Put the front wheel back in just a moment ago and now pondering torque settings as the manual figures feel too much... anyhow off to climbing now with my son so it will have to wait.

  15. Do you have a link to that same lift frame, but can´t see it - wouldn´t mind one of those myself. Maybe down to my poor search ability tho!

Edit to add: Ignore me, was thinking of the lift frame you had, not the paddock stand!

  16. Duly ignored! :joy:
