My ds1100 has developed a starting problem. When it's running its perfect no misfire just a sweet sounding bike. But stop and wait for 20 mins or so it struggles to fire up. Starter turns smoothly but just struggles to catch ,plugs are new ,airfilter new desmo adjust this year belts changed at same time. Any idea anyone? Cheers steve
Sounds like a sensor has failed so the ecu isn’t getting the correct messages and this is dosing an incorrect amount of fuel. I don’t think you have a MAP sensor on that bike and it doesn’t sound like the TPS is faulty as you say the bike runs well when started from cold. I’d look at the engine temp sensor and test that, it could be the ecu thinks your engine is cold when in fact it’s still hot after just a 20 min stop so is overdosing at start up.
IME the problems I had with my Multistrada DS1100 (exactly the same as you describe) were caused by a faulty relay. IIRC, the relay was exactly the same as the headlight relay, so if you swap them over, you’ll know immediately whether a new ignition relay will solve your problem.
as said above, it's almost certainly delivering inaccurate air/fuel mix when hot so anything related to that worth looking at apart from other suggestions. I spent ages swapping, testing and playing with this little fella (the stepper motor) on two of my 1000DS bikes. I think there is some data for testing but they don't come to pieces and i've forgotten any conclusions I came to and I never got to a position where I couldn't start the bike when hot unlike you. I seem to remember adjusting the inlet butterfly stop on one bike to compensate as a last resort, but it really should be a very last resort. You might try opening the throttle a very small increment next time it happens while churning just to see if it helps it to catch. Also - are you happy that the two air bleeds and the TPS are set correctly?
I had trouble with mine. It would start reluctantly and NEVER idle when cold. I did a tbs adjust, screwed in the air bleeds , at which point it was running worse than ever popping and farting, and then took it to a guy to reprogram with Rexxer. First thing he did was the tps reset which is electronic on these. It immediately started right up and idled. Then he reprogrammed according to my mods and his experience. Then the bike ran sweet, smooth down low, pulls clean from 2k, and starts right up pretty much every time. When hot sometimes it needs the tiniest amount of throttle to get going if it sits for a couple of minutes. No problem if it sits for a longer time, seems to only be a short break when hot makes it cranky…
