Hi Everyone I'm having real problems with the side-stand on my ST2, simply with pushing it out in readiness to stand the bike on it. Getting a toe on the bit you push out is a real pain because it's so close under the gear-shift. Only got this bike back in August and then couldn't ride it till the end of November because it took 3 months with HMRC and DVLA to import it from Ireland. By then the weather here on the Hebrides was not biker friendly at all, and I'm still waiting for it to get warmer and drier! I was wondering if anyone has ever modified this type of side-stand, or if it's even possible, or could give me any tips on using it. Any thoughts would be great! Jude
I know what you mean, it is difficult with that one. I just live with it, mostly because I can’t weld and do t even have any welding equipment. If I could weld, I’d remove it and weld a small extension bit on so it’s easier to get your foot on it to push it out and extend it.
Would it be possible to thread an Allen bolt into it, so you can hook that instead? Isn't that what some of the newer bikes have?
Thanks for your thoughts Paul, I'm sure I can find someone who can weld on the Island, I shall ask around. There is a guy up the road with a small garage and he's a biker too, so worth a visit.
Thanks Keith, I think anything is worth looking into. Unfortunately I'm no mechanic, but at least I'll have a couple of ideas now to suggest if I can find someone who might be able to do it.
Hello. I had an ST2 and got used to the side stand. I also had two ST4S's without a problem, but I can't remember if the stands were the same. If the later stands were different, you might be able to change the current stand to one of those. Alternatively, a stand from another Ducati model might fit, and be easier to access? I suggest you check what the stand is made from before you try to have it welded, and a form of bolt-on bracket may be a safer option. I'm sure I've seen some after-market options available, but can't find details at the moment. Good luck. Tom. Update: A search on here for "side stand" may help, and the bracket in this link is what I was thinking of: https://www.ducatiforum.co.uk/threads/cant-find-your-side-stand-simple-fix.42659/ . However, I don't know if would fit your ST2?
Many thanks Tom, those are some good suggestions. Silly thing is I had an ST2 up to about four years ago and didn't have this problem, and that one was also a 1998. Maybe I need different boots! I think I'd lean towards your idea of a bolt on bracket if anything. Also noted the comment on the bottom of the link you put up (put your foot on the bottom of the stand) and that would probably work for me because I'm 5' 9" with long legs. Will give it a try. Thanks again
Hello again. The bolt-on brackets referred to in the above forum link are still available via Ebay and Amazon, and perhaps elsewhere, example link: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/393235542356?_trkparms=amclksrc=ITM&aid=111001&algo=REC.SEED&ao=1&asc=20160811114145&meid=4b7b6a9c63be4376958465ee611a2e96&pid=100667&rk=1&rkt=8&sd=393235542356&itm=393235542356&pmt=1&noa=1&pg=2334524&brand=Unbranded&_trksid=p2334524.c100667.m2042 . These are intended for use on later bikes, but I would be surprised if a resourceful Ducati rider couldn't modify it to fit a different model, and in my view it's better than welding or drilling your original stand? Good luck. Tom. Update: Here's an alternative: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/39331378...yY%2B%2FMYrjSg%3D%3D|ampid:PL_CLK|clp:2047675 . This might work and be easier to fit? Tom.
Thanks so much for those links Tom, those 'extenders' look just the job. I will definitely follow those up. Really appreciate your time and research.
really struggle with operating the (suicide) stand on my 1997 bike. I'm quite short, 28" inside leg, so any slope the wrong direction is a opportunity to drop it. The 99 and later versions are of a different design but are they any easier/ safer and would they fit? Problem is not so much pushing it out but when out there is hardly any lean angle to work with
Hi Amos, I'm 5'9 and a bit and very long in the leg, I discovered I could actually lean over and push the suicide stand forward with my hand! Two weeks ago, having had yet another birthday early this year, I got sensible, downsized and bought an SV 650. It's a great bike super side-stand, everything works, but it will never grab me like riding the ST did.
