Depends who I have to talk to But yes take them out, and handily, they stick on the fork tops between races so I never lose them.
Ultimate Ear for me too after years of trying various ‘disposable’ ones, they just didn’t stay in place, spent more time trying to find them on the floor after taking my helmet off than the ride. The mould of my ear confirmed I have very, very narrow ear canal so no disposables were ever going to fit deep enough to stay in place.
I used to to use the 3M ones and they were good but it was always a faff to get them to seat properly and then I’d often dislodge them when I put my helmet on. I’ve had a couple of sets of moulded ones now and they are very hard to dislodge. PS wonderful stuff but not sure about putting Sugru in your ears, you might need a bit of cling film to stop it sticking and it takes a fair while to go ‘off’
Maybe, like tricolore, you have narrow ear canals. I've never had an issue disloging disposables that I've held in place as they start to expand (as the instructions state). Even more so since I've taken to snipping off the rounded tips. These days I've also taken to giving them a quick lick before putting them in which helps the insertion process. Some may recoil at the thought of that, but not me...
I think some people might consider it unhygienic to lick something and then put in one of your own orifices meanwhile sticking you tongue in someone else's orifices is OK
I tried disposable and went to ultimate Ear Squidgies…..best and most comfortable that I have found. Recently went to the Ultimate with the built in speaker and it’s a game changer for helmet comms and sat nav etc. I always thought it was a bit mental ear plugs to save your hearing yet you have your comms blasting full blast so you can hear it! The in ear monitors provide the best Db attenuation (31 or 32 from memory) and I have the volume down at 3 (rather than10) and I can hear crystal clear at 70+mph! Definitely (for me at least) worth the cash!!
I used the 3M cylindrical ones for years ( my wife contract packed them for EAR) but didn’t find them particularly comfortable or easy to use. Now buy their Earsoft FX which appear to have better attenuation than most custom earplugs and I have found them to be far more comfortable and easier to fit than the older style ones. Have no problems with hearing my Sena comms in Shoei GT Air with the volume turned up but not on max.
As many others on here I find the standard disposable foam options far more effective at sound attenuation than custom-moulded, and I've tried a few of the latter. If you want something bespoke via which to hear an intercom or music etc that's obviously another matter, but if you simply want to diminish the usual helmet din nothing beats the dB reduction of disposables - the best evidence of which is that that's what you see riders shoving in on a MotoGP grid.
I got some from Emtec, fantastic at work and also on the bike. Very comfy to wear. https://www.noisebreaker.com/noisebreaker/recreation/motorcycling/
I've been using these Flare Audio Isolate for a year or two and they're the best for general attenuation (at around 27dB). I see they've been superseded by a new version, but I'd say they're worth a try. They're really easy to pop in/out with the solid Al or Ti core. I don't use intercom, etc so can't comment on that... New version is this. Available in red too
I use Howard Leight Laser-Lite as they have one of the higher attenuation ratings and for me cut out the wind and exhaust noise, but I can still hear voices, sirens, intercom and music well enough. Their profile can help with narrower ear canals and a pack of 200 lasts around 10 years. As you can reuse them unless they get wet, at which point they expand too quickly to get back in your ear.
I use Eggz - I’ve found them perfect over the last couple of years - massive reduction in wind noise, while still hearing ambient sounds & my intercom
A bit like most gear, it’s personal. I tried many disposables and custom made, but find Laser Lites perfect, they adjust to fit, I can give them away, they cost almost nothing. I buy boxes of 200 pairs, which last a couple of years. I’ve ridden across the US, all over Europe with some long days.
I have recently moved from Pinlock (I found they cut out too much sound) to Earpeace Moto Pro. The Earpeace ones are quite steep in price but much better at filtering out juust the right amount of sound. I can hear more of my engine and pipes but come back without my ears ringing.
Yep thats what I did, DIY version also poor. I use these without the leads https://www.dustmasksdirect.co.uk/product/moldex-6401-rocket-cords-disposable-earplugs/
i've used these for many years now, not sure if anyone has already mentioned them. (Howard Leight? QD1?) I was just reviewing what's out there, I can't see anything wrong with using BluTac but I don't think using small carrots is a good idea.
