Hi, I'm in the UK and I've had a break for eight years, lots of 'life' reasons, previously I had many years of Ducati happiness started in 2006 with a 749 ended 2015 with a 1299. So excited I'm ready to return to my passion and decided on a V2 but now I can't get any insurance :-( I did a Bennetts Online application and got a 'sorry can't quote you online' so I called Ducati Insurance thinking this was my best bet and they said unfortunately they can't quote me, I asked what have I done I've not had any claims and seven Ducati's I was very politely told its for one reason only 'lack of recent riding experience' that's the only reason, I was given the solution of get a years riding on a 'similar' bike, and we can give you a competitive quote erhmmm so how do I do that?? I was hoping for something constructive like take this refresher course and get assessed and if you pass all good, but there doesn't seem to be a route. If I can get insured on something else, how do I know that's deemed 'similar'. So any advice greatly received as I don't really know what to do now, I thought a V4 might cause a few eyebrows but seems I can't get a V2 either. Thank you!!
When I first bought a 959 I was asked if I had experience on that kind of bike - despite having many years of no claims and having a Triumph Sprint ST 1050 in the garage. The 959 isn’t that much faster than the Sprint - different riding style and focus but it will still do 160mph and is a 1000cc bike - but the attitude of the insurance industry seems to be that pure sports bikes are a different level of risk and Ducati’s the worst!. I still got insurance for £400 but compared to the £90 I pay for the Triumph it felt like a lot - and from what I can tell that’s pretty cheap compared to the cost of insurance for people living in cities. If I were you I would try a selection of different sports bikes through the comparison sites until you find one that you can get insured on at a reasonable rate and don’t mind riding for a year. Any sports bike will qualify and a year’s no claims will help get you a quote for a V2 next year. Either way you are going to pay a big premium until you have built up your no claims.
I can only offer my deepest sympathies . This issue makes my head boil ! .... it's scandalous ! I'd been living abroad for many years , and used the bike almost daily , insured with a local company .... and if you think UK premiums on big bikes are expensive , insuring abroad as an expat is eye-watering ! Returned to UK because of family issues and not one insurance company would give any discount . Nobody was interested in 20 years clean insurance record in UK , and similar for the foreign insurance , even with all documents kept ! The reason they gave was that all NCD disappears after 2 years from the last policy expiry A bit like casino gambling ..... the odds are stacked in favour of the house , always . I've now come to understand their point of view , and it should have been clear to me .... A lifetime's experience and skill obviously evaporates completely after 2 years .... Doh ! What a dumb-ass I am ! And here's me , wondering why a plastic tub of salt I bought says " Use before August 2024 " -
Try Be-Moto.... I struggled to get insurance on the Streetfighter after a 20 year break.... Had to pay arm and a leg for it, but did get cover from them eventually
Well I thought as Ducati Insurance is Adrian Flux that would be a good specialist but alas not. But I can try Footman I have used them before . Thank you!
That was Bikesure - I forgot until you asked that I changed to Bennetts this year - for the princely sum of £82.34! Sometimes living in the middle of nowhere in darkest Lincolnshire has benefits - I think it contributes to my low insurance cost.
i take it you gocompared and comparethemarketed it?? i tried bemoto and was way too pricey IMO it seems the insurance market has changed since covid, the days of your policy going down every year seem to be over, the opposite is now true, and they dont care, they used to do a deal for you to keep or get the business
I left BeMoto this year and returned Carole Nash. The renewal price wasn't at all competitive. Thought that they'd do the usual haggle if you got a better quote but told me that their underwriter was no longer competitive for large capacity bikes and that was the best they could do...
Sorted after much trying to decide I went for a Monster in the end, because it made me smile and more comfy for my old frame!! I really like it, lots of fun, and 'normal' insurance was secured
