option 719 parts are eye watering prices for trinkets that Park lane Motorad sell by the bucket load to wanna be tourers who never go anywhere. This new version is designed to be a posher bike for the folk who have more money than sense. You now can spec a new version north of 28K. Great bike though, but new tech will need testing before it's durable.
Looks a lot more plasticky. As a previous owner of 8 GS’s over the years, I felt a bit disappointed when I saw the pics, but am looking forward to seeing one in the flesh when they land at dealers.
237kg, for the standard GS, wet weight. …240kg wet for the V4s. Which one is a porker now In fairness, few people check the details, they make assumptions! The Ducati is also longer. Wheelbase has crept up over the years and tbh, they have become long and heavy. My favourite model year Multi was 2013. If only quality of components (everything, fasteners, suspension etc) had been a bit better. Loved the design. Currently on my 3rd GS. Unlikely to buy another ADV/grand tourer though. Prices, weight and size are all too much.
Looking forward to seeing it in the flesh, and its lighter than the previous model, i like it, looks more sporty than previous model, sharper look.
The V4 engine is what makes the Multi. BMW are still using an engine designed at the turn of the last century. Joking aside looks like BMW have taken a chance and modernised the bike looks a lot. Like you, I don’t think I will buy another big adventure bike. I am at an age where weight and size are likely to become an issue in a few years time. Just wish there was a Ducati option like the KTM SMT. Creature comforts of a touring bike but weight, size and price akin to something more agile.
Having seen the issues new buyers are having, I don’t think that will be happening anytime soon. And knowing KTMs pricing policy of selling current year models at a knock down price at the end of the year, I would wait until end of 2024 at least.
Found this which some may find interesting/useful. https://www.cycleworld.com/motorcycle-news/bmw-r-1300-gs-design-analysis/
Exactly. A mini PP. 17” front wheel, 120-130bhp…but short and light. The vast majority of bikes are used 1 up. Carrying a sofa on the back is not required.
It’s the nicest looking GS yet, which isn’t hard to do but it is very Japanese looking and very V Strom.
I think they’ve done a cracking re-design of it, I like how they have made it a lot more compact and 12kgs lighter, some great design tweaks like putting the gearbox under the engine, and it’s now quite an over square power plant, 145 bhp and 110 ft/lbs of torque is not to be sniffed at, that torque figure and how it comes in nice and low in the Rev range will make this thing a weapon on a twisty road, guarantee it would leave 90% of other bikes after 3 or 4 corners, it will be a hoot to ride firing it out of corners with that much torque on tap. Plus it’ll still be reasonably economical on juice and no hassle of chain maintenance on tour. I quite like the white one with the forged wheels, but still can’t quite decide on the headlamp, very distinctive though, I’ll have to see it in the flesh. I’m not really into adventure bikes though, I’d like to see what they are going to do with the roadster version, it would be a weapon on the road with the 17” wheels and some decent tyres, I just hope they sex the styling up a bit cos they tend to play it really conservative with the roadster versions, best BM boxer bikes imo. Such a pity that BMW still have your pants down with all the extra “ package” add ons, the price rockets by the time you’ve clicked a few options £20 grand in no time! Good effort though BMW
The thing that’s always killed the GS for me is that front end. I’ve ridden dozens of them over the years and always struggled with the total lack of feel, the disconnect from the tyre is absolutely brutal imho. Loads of owners I know tell me “you get used to it” but I’ve never managed. My brain is hard wired for fork dive. I never understood their [BMW] determination to remove it. I mean, what’s wrong with dive anyway? Do they really find it so uncomfortable and off putting? Admittedly they’re a comfy thing and tbh the new one is about the best looking they’ve come up with to date. The engine on paper sounds like a nice blend of torque and bhp to be fair, a test ride will see how vibey it is. Shaft drive kinda puts me off too, I always have preferred a chain. Lol, reading this back, the selling points of this bike are frankly lost on me, it’s why I’ve never been a big fan of them. I always found the MTS was by miles the better machine for handling, feel and spirited riding. Hands down.
Looks like it's morphing into an RS, which, for most of us exclusively road riders, wouldn't be such a bad thing.
Shame its lost a litre of fuel capacity. As someone who's toured 2 up on Multistrada 1200 to Italy etc and toured 2 up on a GS I prefer the GS. But we all have differing tastes One thing I have never understood is comments about vague front end feeling. Maybe I'm not pushing the front enough on our crap, pot holed sink hole infested roads
