999 fumey smell

  1. Hi, my 999 has developed this real strong petrol fumey smell when you stop at lights. It stinks. Doesnt appear to be leaking anywhere and not using any more fuel than normal. Any thoughts out there????

  2. Could the filler cap be failing to seal properly?

  3. I appear to have found where the smell is coming from.....
Its very fumey from the crankcase breather when I take the pipe off. Oil was changed approx 500 miles ago but smells to have a high fuel content (not good). The airbox is sealed and not damaged. I know its an obtuse question but does anyone know the level of crankcase back pressure I should find? If I set my finger on the breather outlet it will lift the finger off after around 10 secs at a fast idle speed. Cant say as I find that excessive, any thoughts anybody??

  4. there's no PCV valves on the engine, so the crank case can breath freely as it wishes. Do you have it going into a breather tank at all?

most of them are plumbed through back to the airbox so they can breath in any fuel or oil mist back into the engine. People often talk about piston blowback, but unless you're running a single ring, on a standard three ring piston I really wouldn't worry.

So the crankcase doesn't have to see any back pressure per se. Is your breather pipe going into a breather tank or is it vented open?

  5. Its got the factory breather system still intact and the airbox appears to be intact, all screws fitted etc. What is a typical coolant temp when hot? Mine has always run around 70 c unless I ring its neck (which in part answers my fuel in oil question) The fumey smell is new thou, never had this before. Also last few times ive started it its let a bit of a back fire out of the exhaust (excess fuel which covers all problems I suppose) although it doesnt smoke when running. Think its time to have it set up again really. Your crankcase pressure bit is reassuring thou. The low running temp has always been a niggle and yeah I dont do very long runs.

  6. 70 degrees does seem a bit low, and it should only take a couple or three miles to reach temperature. Normally water cooled stuff lives between 80-85 degrees.

if its not reaching temperature it may be that the bike thinks that it's still not warmed up and thus is fuelling rich as it still thinks cold start. That would explain your abundance of fuel that you're throwing down into the engine as you ride since the bike might have richened the mixture right up.

it might be worth just letting the bike idle to see how long it takes the fan to cut in and out twice, and also note how fast it idles and whether the revs drop when it does reach temperature.

everythings pointing to a sensor. Might be worth checking the thermostat also. :)

  7. Ill go for all that,
    cheers

  8. Coolant temperature sensor... might well be the coolant temperature sensor.

It'll be sending info to the ECU to tell it when the engine is up to temp. If its not working your ecu is always going to think it needs to richen things up a bit.
